Daniel Radcliffe, the name synonymous with Harry Potter for a generation, has certainly proven he's no one-trick pony since hanging up his wizarding robes. From quirky indie flicks like "Swiss Army Man" (yes, the flatulent corpse movie) to action-packed thrillers like "Guns Akimbo," he's deliberately chosen roles that shatter the Potter mold. But, it seems not all pitches are created equal. Recently, Radcliffe revealed a particularly memorable, and memorably awful, idea that was floated his way.
Radcliffe REJECTS 'Oz' Remake?! Potter Reunion DRE...
Speaking on the always-entertaining "Hot Ones," where celebrities battle increasingly spicy chicken wings while answering questions, Radcliffe, promoting his return to Broadway in "Merrily We Roll Along," dove into some of the weirder experiences he's had in Hollywood. It's in that context that he described a pitch so bad, so fundamentally misguided, that it's honestly hard to believe it made it past the initial brainstorming session.
The premise? A "Wizard of Oz" remake starring… wait for it… the entire "Harry Potter" trio. Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson, transported from Hogwarts to Oz. Now, I've heard some pretty wild ideas in my time covering entertainment, but this one really takes the cake. Can you imagine? It's like someone took two beloved franchises, threw them in a blender, and hoped for a magical smoothie. The result, of course, would be something closer to toxic sludge.
Radcliffe's reaction, thankfully, was one of incredulity. He reportedly said, "This should not be made," and honestly, who could argue with him? The mere thought of trying to shoehorn the Harry Potter cast into roles so iconic already is... well, sacrilegious might be too strong a word, but it's close. It would have been a colossal misstep, a cynical attempt to capitalize on nostalgia with zero regard for artistic integrity. You can almost see the dollar signs flashing in the eyes of whoever dreamt that one up.
In other Potterverse news, with the new "Harry Potter" reboot series on the horizon, Radcliffe has officially passed the torch to Dominic McLaughlin, the actor set to embody the boy wizard for a new generation. Radcliffe, keen to avoid becoming a "specter" haunting the new production, penned a heartfelt letter to McLaughlin, wishing him well and hoping he has an even better experience than he did. That’s a classy move, and it really does show how he’s moved on, while still respecting the role that made him famous. Maybe McLaughlin should also watch out for bizarre pitches - they seem to be everywhere.
