Milan, Italy – South Korea breathed a collective sigh of relief this weekend as a late surge in short track speed skating propelled them to meet their self-imposed goal of at least three gold medals at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. With the bobsleigh teams wrapping up competition without a medal chance, the focus shifted squarely to the rink, and the skaters delivered.
Korea's Golden Comeback! How They Stunned the Worl...
The final tally? Three gold, four silver, and three bronze medals. That's a slight uptick from the 2022 Beijing Games, where they managed two golds, five silvers, and two bronzes. The Korean Sport & Olympic Committee (KSOC) had been pretty clear: they wanted more gold this time around. And they got it, albeit right down to the wire.
Kim Gil-li, seemingly out of nowhere, became the hero of the hour. Her victory in the women's 1,500-meter race on Friday night was the golden ticket, edging out none other than her teammate, Choi Min-jeong. Earlier that day, the men's 5,000-meter relay team snagged a silver. You could almost feel the pressure valve release back in Seoul.
It's becoming a familiar story, really. Short track speed skaters are consistently the ones bringing home the hardware. This year, they accounted for two golds, three silvers, and two bronzes – a notable improvement over Beijing. They always seem to thrive under pressure. Having seen them up close, their composure is something to behold.
Kim Gil-li, in particular, had a phenomenal Olympics, grabbing two golds and a bronze. She anchored the women's 3,000m relay team to victory and then followed it up with that crucial 1,500m gold. She even took home a bronze in the 1,000m. With three medals, she led the entire Korean contingent. While Choi Min-jeong snagged a relay gold and a 1,500m silver, she actually etched her name into the history books. With seven career medals, Choi is now the most decorated Korean Olympian, winter *or* summer! Quite the accomplishment.
On the men's side, the future looks bright. Eighteen-year-old Rim Jong-un won bronze in the 1,000m and then helped the 5,000m relay team secure silver. Hwang Dae-heon, a veteran at this point, grabbed silver in the 1,500m, becoming the first Korean male short tracker to medal at three consecutive Winter Olympics. Talk about consistency.
It wasn't all smooth sailing, though. The short track team had a pretty shaky start, crashing out of the semifinals in their first medal event. But they bounced back. Now, with Choi announcing her retirement, all eyes are on Kim, the rising star. The pressure will be immense, but if this Olympics is anything to go by, she's ready for it.
Interestingly, perhaps the biggest surprise came from the snowboarders. While short track got the golds, snowboarding actually had a more memorable Olympics, finishing with one gold, one silver, and one bronze. Before this year, they only had one Olympic medal *ever*. Kim Sang-kyum's silver in the men's parallel giant slalom was a real shocker, a true unexpected success story for the nation.
