Awards season, folks, is like a pressure cooker right now. We’re barreling towards the Oscars, but first, all eyes are on London and the BAFTA Awards this Sunday. This ceremony isn't just a glitzy affair across the pond; it's often a telling sign – though admittedly, not always a foolproof one – of how things might shake out on Hollywood's biggest night.
BAFTA SHOCKER?! Plus, Disney's Bold Oscar Move Rev...
The BAFTA nominations this year have thrown a little wrench into the usual predictions. Some international darlings who are also in the Oscar mix – think films like *Sentimental Value* and *The Secret Agent* – haven't made the cut for the Actor awards at BAFTA. This could signal a divergence in taste between the British and American academies, and that makes things a whole lot more interesting.
And let’s be honest, BAFTA’s record in predicting the Best Picture Oscar is, shall we say, a bit patchy. Only 10 out of the last 24 times have they agreed! In recent years, they've only seen eye-to-eye twice since 2014 (*Nomadland* and *Oppenheimer*). Last year's BAFTA winner, *Conclave*, was a prime example of the divide when *Anora* took home the Oscar. So, while a BAFTA win is definitely a cause for celebration, it's no guarantee of Oscar glory.
One film generating a lot of buzz, particularly in the UK, is *Hamnet*. Focus Features is keen to highlight its impressive international box office, now exceeding $50 million. They're also playing up the fact that Steven Spielberg is actively championing the film. Spielberg's a heavy hitter, and his support can definitely sway voters. Add to that Sam Mendes hosting a Q&A with director Chloe Zhao, and you’ve got a well-oiled campaign machine. Given that Will Shakespeare is practically a national treasure in the UK, could this give *Hamnet* an edge with BAFTA voters? It's definitely something to keep an eye on.
Now, let's switch gears to animation. *Zootopia 2*, Disney's massive box office hit from last year, is hoping to pull off an upset at the Oscars. It's raked in a staggering $1.8 billion worldwide and even smashed records in China. You'd think that kind of global appeal would make it a shoo-in for the Animated Feature Oscar, right? Well, not so fast. It's consistently lost out to *KPop: Demon Hunters* at most of the earlier awards shows. *KPop: Demon Hunters* is a streaming behemoth, and the Annie Awards nominations don't look good for *Zootopia 2*.
Interestingly, *KPop: Demon Hunters* isn't eligible at the BAFTAs, which gives *Zootopia 2* a golden opportunity to make a statement. If it can snag the BAFTA, it could be a significant boost heading into the final stretch of Oscar voting. It just needs to beat out Disney's *Elio* and *Little Amelie: Or The Character Of Rain*. Will *Zootopia 2* finally have its moment? We'll find out on Sunday.
