Barcelona, Spain – After over 140 years of construction, Antoni Gaudí’s magnum opus, the Sagrada Familia basilica, has finally reached its planned peak height. On Friday, construction crews placed the final touch – a colossal, four-winged sculpture representing the Tetramorph – atop the Tower of Jesus, crowning the basilica as the tallest church in the world at a staggering 172.5 meters (566 feet).
Sagrada Familia Finally Complete?! What Happens No...
The sheer scale of this architectural achievement is difficult to comprehend until you're standing in its shadow. I remember visiting Barcelona years ago, and even then, with only a fraction of its current height completed, the Sagrada Familia was a breathtaking sight. To think it's now finally reached its intended height is truly remarkable.
This monumental occasion marks a significant milestone in the ongoing project, which began in 1882. Gaudí himself dedicated over 40 years of his life to the basilica, envisioning a structure that would embody the spirit of Christianity through its intricate facades, soaring towers, and vibrant stained glass. Sadly, he never lived to see his vision fully realized; Gaudí passed away in 1926 after being struck by a tram.
The completion of the Tower of Jesus and its crowning sculpture isn't just about height, though. It’s a testament to the perseverance of generations of architects, engineers, and artisans who have painstakingly carried on Gaudí's work. The construction has faced numerous challenges over the years, from funding issues and the Spanish Civil War to more recent disruptions like the COVID-19 pandemic.
While the basilica has reached its peak height, construction is still ongoing. Interior details, sculptural elements, and other finishing touches remain to be completed. The projected completion date for the entire basilica is currently set for 2026, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of Gaudí's death. That's the hope, anyway. Knowing how complex this project is, I wouldn’t be surprised if there are a few more delays along the way.
Regardless, the Sagrada Familia is already an iconic symbol of Barcelona and a masterpiece of modern architecture. Now, as the tallest church in the world, it stands as a powerful testament to human ingenuity, faith, and the enduring legacy of Antoni Gaudí. It's definitely a sight I plan on seeing again soon.
