Well, this is a bit of a gut punch. News broke this morning that PlayStation Studios is apparently closing down Bluepoint Games, the studio responsible for those absolutely stunning remakes of classics like "Demon's Souls" and "Shadow of the Colossus." According to a report from Bloomberg, the move will unfortunately mean the loss of about 70 jobs.
PlayStation Shuts Down Bluepoint?! Fans Devastated...
Bluepoint, if you're not familiar, was something of a remake powerhouse. They were acquired by PlayStation back in 2021, cementing what many already suspected – that Sony valued their meticulous and frankly, transformative approach to breathing new life into beloved games. Beyond their headlining remakes, they also provided valuable support to other PlayStation studios on various projects. Basically, they were a go-to for technical expertise and a steady hand.
PlayStation, in a statement provided to Bloomberg, offered the usual corporate-speak acknowledging the team’s talent. A spokesperson said, "Bluepoint Games is an incredibly talented team and their technical expertise has delivered exceptional experiences for the PlayStation community. We thank them for their passion, creativity and craftmanship." The statement went on to attribute the closure to, and I quote, "a recent business review." It's always the "business review," isn't it? It's a shame no matter how you slice it.
What makes this particularly surprising – and frankly, a little frustrating – is that Bluepoint was reportedly working on a live-service game set within the "God of War" universe. The project, Bloomberg claims, was ultimately canned before it ever saw the light of day. That's a significant investment to just scrap, and it raises questions about the strategic direction PlayStation is taking with its studios and IP. Was the live-service model not working? Was it not up to par with their standards? We likely won't know the full story.
Founded back in 2006, Bluepoint really cemented its reputation with that "Demon's Souls" remake, a PlayStation 5 launch title that truly showcased the console's power. We even gave it a 9.25, calling it a "delightful treat." And let's not forget their contributions to "God of War Ragnarök," which scored a whopping 9.5 from us and landed as our second-favorite game of 2022. So, yeah, this isn’t some struggling studio we’re talking about. This is a team with a proven track record of delivering exceptional, critically acclaimed experiences. The loss of Bluepoint Games leaves a noticeable gap in the PlayStation landscape, and it remains to be seen what this "business review" truly means for the future of PlayStation's development strategy. It's a tough day for gamers and, more importantly, for the talented developers at Bluepoint.
