Netflix is diving deeper into the action-thriller pool, and this time they've landed "Ballast," a spec script from the up-and-coming writer Justin Piasecki. If the name sounds familiar, that's because Piasecki is repped by Relay, and his writing is already turning heads in Hollywood. The deal officially closed recently, and it seems Netflix wasn’t the only one interested in this script.
Netflix Lands "Ballast"! Shocking Action Deal Stun...
What really caught my eye about this deal, besides the hefty price tag I'm sure it commanded, is the involvement of Thunder Road Pictures. These guys aren’t messing around. We're talking about the production powerhouse behind the "John Wick" franchise, so you know they understand how to deliver high-octane thrills. Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee are set to produce, with Charlie Morrison overseeing things for Netflix. This is a serious team.
So, what’s "Ballast" about? Well, it’s not your typical love story on a cruise ship. The story plunges into the lives of a shipping engineer and her crew aboard a massive cargo ship in the Atlantic. They stumble upon a deadly secret: car bombs cleverly hidden within the thousands of vehicles on board. Talk about a bad day at the office! That's a premise ripe for tension and explosions, and perfectly set up for some serious maritime mayhem. It also featured on the prestigious 2021 Black List, which is essentially a who's who of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood.
Interestingly, Piasecki's star is clearly on the rise, and this Netflix deal comes hot on the heels of Relay's success on the streaming platform over the holiday season. Thunder Road, who also have a past with Relay and produced the critically acclaimed conspiracy thriller "Relay" which premiered at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival and was released by Bleecker Street last summer, seem to be betting big on his talent. It’s always interesting to see how relationships in this industry develop and flourish.
Thunder Road isn’t resting on its laurels, of course. They have a whole slate of projects in the works, including "Mister," an action-comedy with Walton Goggins and Chloë Grace Moretz, which sounds like a potentially wild ride. They are also developing Marc Webb’s Lionsgate thriller "Day Drinker" starring Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz, Elegance Bratton’s crime thriller "By Any Means" starring Yahya Adul-Mateen II and Mark Wahlberg, "Wind River: Rising," and the Michelle Yeoh action vehicle "The Surgeon." That’s a diverse and ambitious lineup. Piasecki, who is represented by Paradigm, Range Media Partners, and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, now has to deliver the goods. But with Thunder Road behind him, and Netflix hungry for content, "Ballast" has a real shot at becoming the next big action-thriller hit. I'll be watching this one closely.
