BMW M Mulls High-Performance Off-Roader, Hints Boss: Is an M-badged off-road beast on the horizon?

BMW M Goes Mudding?! Off-Road Beast SHOCKS Fans!

Get ready, off-road enthusiasts! BMW M, the performance division we all know and love, might just be throwing its hat into the rugged, high-performance ring. Frank van Meel, the big cheese over at BMW M, recently dropped a rather intriguing hint about the possibility of an M-badged off-road vehicle. Could this be the answer to our prayers for a truly bonkers Bavarian brawler?

While BMW already offers some slightly more adventurous versions of the X5 and is supposedly cooking up a competitor to the iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class, this latest buzz suggests they're considering something *more*. Something...M. Think mud-slinging performance with the heart of a track star. It's a tantalizing prospect, to say the least.

Van Meel, speaking to the folks at Australia's *CarExpert*, acknowledged the potential of adding an off-road model to the M family, pointing to the company's rich racing heritage as a justification. He stopped short of shouting from the rooftops that it's a done deal, but he definitely didn't shut the door. "I can imagine M in the off-road area," he said. "We have a racing history. It’s not only the World Endurance Championship and International Motor Sports Association sports car classes; there is also the Paris-Dakar Rally." That Dakar reference certainly pricked up our ears here. After all, it hints at something truly robust.

It's true, despite their long history, BMW hasn't really unleashed a true high-performance off-road machine. They teased us back in 2022 with the Dune Taxi concept, but that all-electric prototype sadly never made it to production. Maybe this M-badged beast will finally be the one to break the mold.

If BMW does give this the green light, it's likely that any M-badged off-roader would be based on the upcoming G74, a model supposedly designed to go head-to-head with the G-Class. The standard version is expected around 2029, so we might have to wait a little while for the M variant, but good things come to those who wait, right?

BMW isn't the only brand sniffing around the high-performance off-road playground. We've seen several premium competitors unveil concepts in recent years, all trying to blend rugged capability with eye-watering performance. Remember Audi's Activesphere from 2023? Or Cadillac's wild Elevated Velocity concept? Even Genesis is getting in on the action with their X Gran Equator and X Skorpio concepts. It seems like everyone wants a piece of this increasingly appealing pie. So, the question is: will BMW finally deliver the M-badged off-road machine we've all been secretly dreaming of?
