Ted McGinley, the ever-affable face we know and love from Apple TV+'s *Shrinking*, recently opened up about the "challenge" of portraying a particularly *altered* Derek in the show's third season. And boy, was he altered.

Ted McGinley "Shrinking" Role: What Episode 304 Ho...

Now, a quick spoiler warning for those who haven't caught up: Episode 304, "The Field," throws Derek for a loop – a THC-infused loop, that is. Our eternally optimistic Derek accidentally ingests a whopping 650 mg of THC in the form of his son Matthew's gummy edibles. Chaos, as you might imagine, ensues. Think panicked mannequin anxieties and declarations of impending doom to bewildered shopkeepers. It's peak McGinley, but with a distinctly psychedelic twist.

McGinley himself described the experience as "one of the most challenging things I've ever had to do as an actor." And honestly, I can see why. Acting stoned is a well-trodden comedic trope, but McGinley wasn't just going for laughs. He had to convey the character's genuine discomfort and disorientation within the confines of the show's pacing. "I had to squeeze into the time frame of the show so I couldn’t do anything as slow as I wanted to," he explained. "And I had verbose dialog. There was a lot going on in a very short period of time." The trick, he says, was to *not* try to act high, but to play it as if he was trying to appear totally normal, which, ironically, is where the comedy really shines through.

The episode isn't just about comedic highs, though. It also delves into the complexities of Derek's relationship with his son Matthew, who finds himself back in the nest after losing his job. This leads to Derek and his wife Liz deciding to enforce some tough love, a decision that clearly weighs on Derek.

"Derek sees a lot of himself in Matthew, and in the best parts of Matthew," McGinley noted. He also drew parallels to his own experiences as a father of two boys. "My wife and I sometimes will disagree on [how to parent.] I think every parent has that, and it’s so real.” It's this grounding in real-life relatable scenarios that makes *Shrinking* so much more than just a sitcom, and makes McGinley's performance – even in a THC-fueled haze – so compelling. It reminds us that even the most perpetually positive people have their struggles, their anxieties, and sometimes, their accidental encounters with potent edibles.
