Well, that was a shocker. Inter Milan, a team many expected to cruise through their Champions League playoff tie, got a serious reality check against Bodo/Glimt in Norway. The final score? A painful 3-1 defeat that leaves Inter with a mountain to climb in the return leg.
Inter SHOCKED in Norway! What Will This Devastatin...
The match started promisingly enough, or at least, not disastrously. But then, Sondre Brunstad Fet found the back of the net for Bodo/Glimt in the 20th minute. That early goal seemed to rattle the Italian side, especially with key midfielder Hakan Çalhanoğlu sidelined with an injury. You could almost feel the tension radiating from the television screen.
Inter did manage to claw back into the game briefly. Francesco Pio Esposito, a bright spot for the Nerazzurri, scored a crucial away goal in the 30th minute, giving Inter fans a glimmer of hope. At that point, I thought they might actually turn things around. Boy, was I wrong.
The second half was where the wheels completely came off. Bodo/Glimt came out firing, and Inter simply couldn't handle the pressure. Jens Petter Hauge scored in the 61st minute, and just three minutes later, Kasper Høgh added another, leaving Inter stunned and the home crowd in a frenzy. Those two quick goals really sealed Inter's fate, turning a manageable situation into a genuine crisis.
Honestly, watching the match, you could tell something was off with Inter. The usually rock-solid defense looked shaky, the midfield lacked its usual creativity, and the attack, aside from Esposito's goal, was largely ineffective. Maybe it was the cold Norwegian weather, maybe it was complacency, or maybe Bodo/Glimt is just a really good team. Whatever the reason, Inter has a lot of work to do.
Now, the return leg is looming, scheduled for Tuesday, February 24th, at 23:00 CET. It's going to be a tense affair, to say the least. Inter needs to score at least two goals just to force extra time, and they can't afford to concede any. Playing at home will definitely be an advantage, but Bodo/Glimt has proven they're no pushovers. They're organized, disciplined, and clearly have the ability to score goals. This Champions League playoff tie is far from over, but Inter needs to find a way to rediscover their form, and fast, if they want to avoid a humiliating exit. Personally, I wouldn't bet against them entirely, but they need to show a completely different side of themselves next week.
