Audi CEO Calms Fears: Electric Sports Car Still on Track

Audi's Electric Sports Car SHOCK! What Happens Nex...

Okay, deep breaths everyone, because the rumor mill has been churning out some potentially anxiety-inducing news for Audi enthusiasts. Recent whispers suggested Porsche might be pumping the brakes on its electric Boxster and Cayman projects, throwing the future of Audi’s jointly developed electric sports car into question. Considering the planned 2027 release date and shared platform, well, you can see why some folks were getting a little worried.

Thankfully, Audi CEO Gernot Döllner has stepped in to address these concerns head-on. According to German regional newspaper *Donaukurier*, Döllner issued an internal memo emphatically denying the project’s cancellation. In fact, he stated quite clearly that “There is no question about the platform being delivered by Porsche.” That's pretty definitive, right? He went on to say the joint development of this performance-focused electric model is "progressing with good cooperation between the Porsche Team and the Audi Team." So, at least from Audi's perspective, it's all systems go.

Now, whether this translates to a full-throated commitment from Porsche on its electric 718 project is another story. Rumors of battery-related development hiccups have been circulating, although Porsche hasn’t officially confirmed any technical snags. They maintain that electric versions of the Boxster and Cayman are still very much on the horizon. So, let's hope that things are going well.

Bloomberg even chimed in, suggesting that the only potential roadblock is the new Porsche CEO, Michael Leiters. It's worth remembering that Audi previously touted its Concept C – the precursor to this electric sports car – as a "TT 2.0" moment. This signaled a bold new design language, a renewed focus on higher-quality interiors, and even the welcome return of some good old-fashioned physical buttons. A welcome move in my opinion!

Think about it: pulling the plug on this car now, especially after all the hype, would be a real blow to Audi's image. The brand has been playing catch-up with BMW and Mercedes in the luxury car race for years. Cancelling a car at this stage could really set them back. So, while there might be some behind-the-scenes maneuvering and the usual development challenges, Döllner’s reassurance provides a much-needed dose of optimism. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that this electric sports car makes it to the finish line as planned – and lives up to the "TT 2.0" promise.
