Current Affairs 18 February 2026

The chill of the Winter Olympics is definitely in the air! Tuesday delivered some thrilling performances, particularly on the ice and the bobsled track. Japan is looking strong in women's figure skating, while Germany proved unstoppable in the two-man bobsled event.

Japan Dominates! Is Olympic Glory Next? Germany's ...

Ami Nakai, representing Japan, absolutely stunned in the women's figure skating short program. She nailed a difficult triple axel, a jump that can make or break a skater's performance, earning a score of 78.71. That put her firmly in first place, a significant achievement at this level. And she wasn't alone in bringing glory to Japan. Compatriot Kaori Sakamoto also skated brilliantly, securing a strong second position. It’s exciting to see such talent emerging from Japan, and they're definitely ones to watch in the free skate.

The US is also in the mix, thanks to Alysa Liu, who is currently holding down third place. She's a phenomenal skater, and while she might not have had the absolute perfect skate, she's still very much in contention for a medal. Anything can happen in the free skate, and Liu has the skill and artistry to climb even higher. The atmosphere at these events is always electric, and you could really feel the pressure mounting on the skaters as they took to the ice. It's a testament to their dedication and mental fortitude that they can perform at such a high level under such intense scrutiny.

Meanwhile, down on the bobsled track, Germany put on a dominant display in the two-man event. They didn't just win; they swept the podium, securing all three medal positions. It was a masterclass in precision and teamwork. The German teams looked incredibly well-prepared, with smooth starts and flawless runs. It's clear they've invested heavily in their bobsled program, and their hard work is paying off.

For the US bobsledders, it was a tougher day. Mistakes unfortunately cost them dearly, pushing them out of medal contention. Bobsledding is a sport where tiny errors can have huge consequences, and it's a real shame when you see athletes who have trained so hard have their hopes dashed by a small slip-up. However, there's still plenty of time left in the Olympics, and I'm sure the US teams will be looking to bounce back in the other bobsled events. That's the thing about the Olympics - it's a rollercoaster of emotions, with highs and lows, triumphs and disappointments. But that's what makes it so compelling to watch.
