Real Madrid eked out a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Benfica in the first leg of their Champions League playoff yesterday, a match that, frankly, had a bit of everything. From a promising performance by young Arda Güler to allegations of racism and a Jose Mourinho ejection, it was certainly a game to remember – or perhaps try to forget, depending on your allegiances.
Real Madrid Squeezes Past Benfica! Mourinho EJECTE...
The match, played on Benfica's home turf, saw Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti give Arda Güler a starting nod, a move that generated a lot of buzz pre-game. Güler showed flashes of brilliance, his deft touches and vision hinting at the player he could become. While he didn't directly contribute to the goal, his presence definitely added a spark to Real Madrid’s attack in the first half. However, the deadlock wasn't broken until the second half when Vinicius Junior, after a period of frustrating Benfica’s defense, finally found the back of the net. It was a well-taken goal, a cool finish under pressure.
But the game wasn't just about football. Controversy erupted around the 50th minute when Vinicius Junior stopped play to allege racial abuse. He pointed towards Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni, claiming the player had made racist gestures. Now, I wasn’t on the pitch, and I can only report what was observed. Play was stopped for a few minutes, tempers flared, and things looked like they could spiral out of control. Surprisingly, it was Benfica's own coach, Jose Mourinho, who stepped in to calm the situation. He spoke at length with Vinicius, seemingly defusing the tension and convincing him to continue playing. Credit to Mourinho for that, regardless of your feelings about him, a level head prevailed at a critical moment.
Speaking of Mourinho, his calm demeanor didn't last the entire game. In a move that surprised absolutely nobody who's followed his career, the Portuguese manager was sent off in the 85th minute after receiving a second yellow card. He was visibly furious with a refereeing decision, arguing vehemently on the sidelines. It was classic Mourinho – passion, fury, and a touch of theatricality. You could almost see it coming.
Ultimately, Real Madrid leaves Lisbon with a slender advantage. The 1-0 away win puts them in a strong position heading into the second leg at the Bernabéu. However, Benfica showed they are no pushovers, and with Mourinho hopefully managing to stay in the dugout for the return fixture, we can expect another fiery encounter. The allegations of racism are definitely going to be investigated further, that much is certain, and will cast a shadow over what was, on the field, a closely contested match.
