Well, folks, it looks like Konami is streamlining things a bit in the digital realm. Metal Gear Solid 4: Sons of the Patriots and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker have seemingly disappeared from the PlayStation 3's digital storefront. That's right, you can't buy them digitally anymore. And, not entirely coincidentally, this comes right on the heels of the big reveal for Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2.
Metal Gear Solid DISAPPEARS! PS3 Store SHOCK Leave...
I stumbled across this through the PS3 subreddit – those guys are *sharp*. They noticed that while the games are still *visible* in the store, the all-important "purchase" button has gone AWOL. So, you can browse and reminisce about the good old days, but pulling the trigger and adding them to your digital library? Nope. Of course, if you already own them digitally, or have a physical copy kicking around, you’re still good to go. Your PS3 isn’t going to suddenly reject your copy of Snake sneaking around Shadow Moses (again).
Now, the *Master Collection Vol. 2*, which was announced during a Sony State of Play stream not too long ago, includes both *Metal Gear Solid 4* and *Peace Walker*, alongside *Metal Gear Ghost Babel*. This collection is slated to drop on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Basically, Konami is clearly steering everyone towards the newer platforms for these titles.
And honestly, who can blame them? It's a smart business move, even if it stings a little for those of us still clinging to our PS3s. The *Master Collection* is actually a pretty big deal, especially because *Metal Gear Solid 4* has been trapped on the PS3 since it launched. I remember buying my PS3 specifically *for* that game back in the day! This marks the first time it will be available on other platforms, so that’s definitely a win for accessibility.
But, and there's always a "but", the *Master Collection Vol. 2* won't include *Metal Gear Online*, which was a pretty big deal back in the PS3 days. Konami has said they’re aiming to keep the PS3 quirks in the new version, which is nice to hear. But the loss of *MGO* is a blow for those of us who spent countless hours sneaking, shooting, and generally being sneaky online. It’s understandable, given the complexities of reviving a dormant online service, but still a bit of a bummer. So, goodbye to the PS3 store versions, but hello to a new generation experiencing these classics (minus the awesome multiplayer, sadly).
