NetEase Exodus! Studio Defection Sparks Industry Shockwaves!
Gaming News 16 February 2026

It seems like just yesterday we were hearing about NetEase's big plans for expansion into the Western gaming market. Now, the headlines are telling a different story. The latest development is the departure of Anchor Point Studio from under the NetEase umbrella, leaving the studio to fend for itself as an independent entity. This isn't exactly a bolt from the blue, considering the recent pattern, but it still raises eyebrows.

NetEase Exodus! Studio Defection Sparks Industry S...

Anchor Point, a studio that was only officially unveiled in April of this year with the ambitious goal of crafting action-adventure titles, is now striking out on its own. CEO Paul Ehreth, a name familiar to many thanks to his work as lead designer on *Control* at Remedy, took to LinkedIn to announce the change. He framed it as a positive, emphasizing the opportunity for a more focused vision and new partnerships. It's the kind of optimistic spin you'd expect, but the reality of securing funding as an indie studio is always a daunting prospect.

Ehreth's statement hints at ongoing discussions with potential investors, which is hardly surprising. He also extended gratitude to NetEase for their initial support in building a "world-class" team. That’s great, but one can't help but wonder about the long-term security of those employees as Anchor Point navigates the choppy waters of independence. The studio, with offices in Seattle and Barcelona, had grand plans to expand its workforce, but those plans are now undoubtedly contingent on securing that crucial funding.

The timing of this split is particularly noteworthy given NetEase's recent history. The company has been actively reducing its Western footprint, either shuttering or cutting ties with several studios, including Bad Brain Game Studios, T-Minus Zero Entertainment, and Fantastic Pixel Castle. This wave of departures contradicts a pledge made earlier this year to support its overseas studios, a promise made amidst reports of widespread layoffs. Remember that statement from Anchor Point back in February reassuring everyone that they were “very much still growing” under NetEase? Yeah, well, things change.

It all paints a picture of a shifting strategy at NetEase, perhaps a recalibration of their global ambitions or a redirection of resources. Whatever the reason, Anchor Point Studio now faces a challenging but potentially rewarding path. They have the talent, at least on paper, but the indie game development landscape is notoriously competitive. The success of Anchor Point will depend on their ability to not only create a compelling game but also to secure the financial backing necessary to bring their vision to life. We've reached out to NetEase for comment on this continuing trend but have yet to receive a response. The story, as they say, is still developing.
