Market Chaos! Stocks Surge Then PLUMMET: What Will Happen Next?!
Economy & Finance 16 February 2026

Istanbul's Borsa Istanbul (BIST) started the week on an upbeat note. The BIST 100 index enjoyed a healthy climb during the morning session, reflecting a generally positive sentiment in the market. As of 13:00 local time on February 16, 2026, the index stood at 14,391.13 points, a solid 1.48% increase from Friday's close.

Breaking it down, the BIST 100 added 210.45 points to its value throughout the morning. It's always encouraging to see broad-based gains, and this morning was no exception. Virtually every sector participated in the upward trend. The financial leasing and factoring sector really stood out, leading the charge with a significant jump of 3.91%. Quite a performance!

A couple of factors seem to be at play here. Globally, we're seeing a slight easing of risk aversion, largely thanks to that slightly lower-than-expected inflation data coming out of the US last week. However, it's worth noting that trading volumes are a bit subdued. Market closures in the US, China, and South Korea are definitely contributing to that. A thinner market can sometimes amplify movements, so it's wise to keep that in mind.

Domestically, the BIST 100 hit a new high of 14,320.87 points during the session. Seems like investors were feeling optimistic. Further fueling the markets was some data from the Ministry of Treasury and Finance. Turkey's central government budget revenues for January came in at 1 trillion 421 billion 245 million lira. Expenditures, on the other hand, reached 1 trillion 635 billion 788 million lira. These numbers, while important, don't seem to have been the primary driver of this morning's gains, though they undoubtedly play a role in the overall economic picture. I always find these macro figures interesting, but often it's the sentiment driving the market more than the actual numbers themselves.

Looking ahead, analysts are predicting a relatively quiet data calendar for the rest of the day, both here in Turkey and internationally. From a technical standpoint, keep an eye on those resistance levels at 14,500 and 14,600 points. If the BIST 100 can break through those, we could see further upside. Conversely, the support levels are pegged at 14,300 and 14,200 points. A dip below those could signal a potential pullback. Of course, as any seasoned investor knows, past performance is no guarantee of future results. We'll continue to monitor the situation and report any significant developments.
