Schalke 04 manager Miron Muslic found himself eating humble pie – and maybe some lahmacun – after his team’s recent victory against Holstein Kiel. The Bundesliga 2 match, which saw Schalke snatch the top spot with a 2-1 win, was overshadowed by a lighthearted, yet slightly awkward, halftime apology.
"Only Lahmacun": Star Player's Bizarre Claim Leads...
The source of the mea culpa? A pre-game exchange between Muslic and defender Hasan Kuruçay. Apparently, Kuruçay approached his coach with a confident declaration: "Coach, I smell a goal!" Muslic, perhaps not taking the striker's premonition seriously, quipped back that the only thing Kuruçay could likely smell was lahmacun, a popular Turkish flatbread pizza. It’s the kind of good-natured ribbing you often hear in locker rooms, but sometimes, even the best-intentioned jokes can land a little flat.
However, Kuruçay decided to let his feet do the talking – or rather, the scoring. In the 29th minute of the away match against Kiel, the 29-year-old center-back found the back of the net, extending Schalke’s lead. It was a resounding answer to his manager’s playful skepticism. “He gave me a great answer by scoring a goal,” Muslic admitted after the game. “I apologized to him at halftime.” Clearly, the goal-scoring smell was indeed on point.
The victory propelled Schalke to the top of the Bundesliga 2 standings with 43 points, edging out Darmstadt who sit just behind them with 42. This win really underscored the team’s determination this season. The first goal came from Kenan Karaman, another key player whose performance has been consistently strong. He’s directly contributed to 11 goals this season, with a solid 8 goals and 3 assists. You could argue that Karaman and Kuruçay are a big part of what makes the team so effective.
It’s always interesting to see the dynamic between players and managers. Sometimes a little bit of humor, even if it backfires a bit, can actually bring a team closer together. And in this case, it seems like Muslic’s quick apology and Kuruçay's game-winning goal created a memorable moment, proving that a little bit of self-awareness (and maybe a shared love of lahmacun) can go a long way towards team harmony. It's a great story, and it'll be interesting to see if Schalke can hold onto that top spot.
