Chase Elliott Heartbreak! Daytona Dream Dashed in Final Lap!
Sports 16 February 2026

Well, folks, another Daytona 500 is in the books, and boy, was it a wild one! The 2026 edition certainly lived up to the hype, delivering all the drama and carnage we've come to expect from "The Great American Race." But this year, it was Chase Elliott who was left standing on the precipice of victory, only to have it snatched away in the closing moments. You could practically feel the collective groan of his fanbase as Tyler Reddick stole the show.

Chase Elliott Heartbreak! Daytona Dream Dashed in ...

Elliott, NASCAR's perennial Most Popular Driver, found himself in an unlikely position to win, starting the final lap way back in 10th. Then, as is so often the case at Daytona, chaos erupted. A multi-car wreck took out several frontrunners, including Carson Hocevar, Michael McDowell, and Erik Jones. Just like that, Elliott was suddenly in the mix, surging forward on the outside lane like a rocket.

“I'm not really sure what happened with the first wreck,” Elliott told FOX Sports, almost in disbelief. “But we ended up kind of getting gifted the lead.” And gifted it was. It’s funny how quickly fortunes can change at Daytona, isn’t it? One minute you’re just hoping for a decent finish, the next you’re staring down the barrel of a potential Daytona 500 win.

However, this is where things got tricky. Heading into the final two turns, Tyler Reddick, lurking in the shadows, made his move. Reddick emerged from behind Zane Smith, mounting a serious challenge for the lead. Elliott, desperately trying to fend off Reddick, threw a block, but it triggered another wreck amongst the trailing cars. In the ensuing melee, Reddick somehow managed to navigate his way through the smoke and debris, ultimately crossing the finish line first, handing 23XI Racing (owned by Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin) a massive victory. Hamlin himself had a race to forget, finishing way back in 31st.

Elliott, understandably, was devastated. He limped home, credited with fourth place. I can only imagine what was going through his mind. He has a Daytona 500 victory on his bucket list and now the wait continues. After getting out of his car, it was clear he was crushed. "This really sucks," Elliott said with a tone of disappointment and frustration. He's been so close so many times, and to have it slip away like that… well, you can't blame him for being upset. Still, you've gotta admire his grit. He'll be back, no doubt, and he'll be hungry for that elusive Daytona 500 crown.
