Well, folks, it looks like the Brontë sisters are still pulling in the crowds, even in 2024. Emerald Fennell’s hotly anticipated gothic romance take on “Wuthering Heights” absolutely dominated the US box office on its opening day, raking in a cool $11 million, according to Variety. That's a pretty impressive debut, I must say.

Playing in a wide release across 3,682 theaters, this new adaptation of the classic novel, starring Margot Robbie as the iconic Cathy and Jacob Elordi as the brooding Heathcliff, is projected to amass around $40 million over this President's Day holiday weekend. Considering the film’s $80 million production budget, a similar showing internationally should cement it as a solid win for the studio. I’ve always found "Wuthering Heights" a bit…intense, but clearly, there’s still a huge appetite for tragic, windswept romance. The cast is certainly stellar, with Hong Chau, Alison Oliver, Shazad Latif, Martin Clunes, and Ewan Mitchell all adding their talent to the mix. And the soundtrack, composed by the always-interesting Charli XCX? I’m definitely curious to hear that!

But “Wuthering Heights” wasn’t the only new kid on the block. Sony Pictures' animated offering, "GOAT," took second place, grossing $7.1 million on opening day. This one's produced by none other than Stephen Curry and focuses on "roarball," a unique, animal-centric version of basketball. Given Curry’s involvement, it makes sense. It's expected to reach $25 million by the end of the holiday week. With a voice cast including Caleb McLaughlin, Curry himself, Gabrielle Union, and Nick Kroll, it seems like they've pulled out all the stops to appeal to a wide audience. It's directed by Tyree Dillihay and Adam Rosette, so it will be interesting to see how the production crew delivers on this unique premise.

Third place went to Amazon MGM Studios’ “Crime 101,” pulling in $3.9 million across 3,161 locations. This Bart Layton-directed thriller boasts a heavy-hitting cast including Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Barry Keoghan, and Halle Berry. The plot? A detective on the hunt for a criminal attempting one last big score. Sounds like a classic crime caper with some serious star power, and judging from the early numbers, it's drawing in viewers.

Rounding out the top five, “Solo Mio” managed to snag fifth place in its second week, adding $1.4 million to its total. Projections are showing "Send Help" reaching $48 million in total gross, while “Solo Mio” is expected to hit around $18 million. It's a competitive market out there, and with the President's Day weekend still in full swing, these numbers could shift significantly. One thing's for sure: there's something for everyone at the box office right now, from gothic romance to animated sports flicks. So grab some popcorn and enjoy!
