Hollywood's finest make-up artists and hair stylists were celebrated this past Saturday at the 13th annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards (MUAHS). The awards, a key indicator for the upcoming Oscars, took place at the Westin Bonaventure in Los Angeles, with the ever-hilarious Rachael Harris hosting the evening.
'SNL' SHOCKER! 'Frankenstein' & 'Sinners' Steal MU...
Leading the pack in the film categories were the Oscar-nominated powerhouses "Sinners," "One Battle After Another," and "Frankenstein." All three films walked away with significant wins, further cementing their status as frontrunners in the make-up and hairstyling Oscar race. It's always interesting to see how these guild awards influence the Academy's choices; they really do give a good sense of where the industry's sentiment lies.
Warner Bros.' "Sinners," already a darling of awards season with a whopping 16 Oscar nominations, snagged wins for both Best Period and/or Character Makeup and Hair Styling. The film's attention to detail in recreating historical looks clearly resonated with the Guild. Not to be outdone, fellow Warner Bros. production, "One Battle After Another," itself a contender with 13 Oscar nods, took home awards for Contemporary Make-Up and Hair Styling. These wins showcase the versatility and talent within the Warner Bros. stable of artists.
Netflix's "Frankenstein" rounded out the film category victors, earning the prize for Best Special Make-Up Prosthetics. This win highlights the incredible artistry involved in bringing fantastical characters and creatures to life on screen. It's worth noting that "Sinners" and "Frankenstein," along with some strong international contenders, are all vying for the coveted Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar this year. The competition is definitely fierce!
Over in the television realm, NBC's "Saturday Night Live" stole the show with three wins, including a well-deserved honor for its 50th Anniversary Special. "SNL's" ability to transform its cast into a diverse array of characters each week is a testament to the dedication and skill of its make-up and hair teams. Apple TV also had a strong showing, with "The Studio" and "Palm Royale" each securing two awards across both make-up and hair styling categories. Disney+'s "Skeleton Crew" doubled down with wins in the Children and Teen Programming categories, proving that even younger audiences appreciate exceptional artistry.
Beyond the competitive categories, the MUAHS Awards also took time to honor industry legends. Amy Madigan received the Distinguished Artisan Award, while Emmy-winning make-up artist Michael Johnston was presented with the Vanguard Award. Greg Nelson, the genius behind the make-up in "Raging Bull" and Michael Jackson's "Thriller," received the Lifetime Achievement Award for Make-Up, and Judy Alexander Cory, the hairstylist for iconic films like "Forrest Gump" and "The Matrix," was recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Hair Stylists. It was a wonderful night celebrating not just the present, but also the rich history of these vital crafts.
