Purdue just steamrolled Iowa, folks. No. 13 Purdue extended their winning streak to four games Saturday night with a convincing 78-57 victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes. It was a road game, adding to the impressiveness of the win. Honestly, watching them play, it felt like Purdue was just toying with Iowa at times.
Purdue CRUSHES Iowa! Is This Their Year?!
C.J. Cox and Gicarri Harris led the scoring charge for the Boilermakers, each putting up 14 points. But it wasn't just about individual brilliance; this was a team effort through and through. Purdue, who, by the way, leads the nation in assists per game, showed why. They racked up 20 assists on 25 made field goals. That's some unselfish basketball right there! Braden Smith was the orchestrator, dishing out a game-high 12 assists. The way they moved the ball, finding the open man, was just beautiful to watch. Really.
Iowa, on the other hand, just couldn't seem to get anything going. They were coming off a loss to Maryland, and the struggle was real. Despite playing in front of a sold-out home crowd, they just couldn't find their rhythm. You could almost feel the frustration radiating from the arena. They'd won six of their last seven before the Maryland game, so this was a bit of a stumble for them, and they just didn't seem to have the answer against Purdue's defense.
Trey Kaufman-Renn also had a stellar performance for Purdue, recording a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Fletcher Loyer chipped in with another 12 points, making it a balanced scoring attack. The Boilermakers really put their foot down in the first half, establishing a commanding 36-25 lead at halftime, thanks to a dominant 15-2 scoring run. I mean, you could see the game slipping away from Iowa even then.
So, what's next for these two teams? Purdue heads back home to face Michigan on Tuesday night. That should be a good one. Iowa, meanwhile, will be looking to bounce back as they host No. 7 Nebraska. They'll need to regroup quickly if they want to avoid another loss, especially against a tough opponent like Nebraska. As for Purdue, if they keep playing like this, they'll be a tough out for anyone in the Big Ten, and, frankly, come March Madness time, I think they could make a deep run.
