So, remember all that buzz about Emerald Fennell, the brilliant mind behind "Promising Young Woman," taking on Zatanna for a DC movie? Yeah, turns out that's not happening. And the reason why, according to Fennell herself, is pretty fascinating: it was apparently *too* out there for the superhero genre.
Zatanna Movie Canceled?! Director Reveals Shocking...
Five years ago, it felt like a perfect match. Fennell, fresh off the success and critical acclaim of her directorial debut, was poised to inject a unique, possibly subversive, perspective into the world of capes and superpowers. Deadline even broke the news back in March 2021 – Fennell writing Zatanna! – and it felt like DC was finally taking some creative risks. But alas, the road to superhero movie development is paved with good intentions and, sometimes, a healthy dose of second-guessing.
Fennell, reflecting on the project now, seems to chalk it up to a clash of styles. She recently suggested that her vision for the Mistress of Magic, Zatanna, was simply "too far away from the genre." Which, let's be honest, knowing Fennell's penchant for the dark and the demented, is incredibly intriguing. I can only imagine what kind of spellbinding, possibly unsettling, narrative she had brewing. Think less generic CGI battles, more psychological horror tinged with mystical arts. Maybe Warner Bros. wasn't quite ready for that.
It’s a shame, really. Because while superhero films have their place, I think there's a real hunger for something that pushes the boundaries, that isn’t afraid to get a little weird and, dare I say, demented. Fennell's "Promising Young Woman" proved she could handle complex themes with a darkly comedic edge, and that kind of sensibility could have been a breath of fresh air for the often-formulaic superhero landscape. Of course, maybe it just wasn't meant to be. Projects fall apart all the time in Hollywood, and sometimes the most exciting ideas are the ones that remain just that: ideas.
The world of DC movies is certainly a turbulent one, so it's probably best to not get too attached to any one project until it's actually playing in theaters. One can only hope that Fennell gets another chance to bring her unique vision to the big screen, whether it's in the superhero realm or elsewhere. And who knows, maybe someday we'll get to see glimpses of what her "demented" Zatanna could have been. Until then, we can only imagine.
