Germany Rethinking Nuclear Weapons?! Russia's Shocking Warning!
Current Affairs 14 February 2026

The whispers are getting louder, and Moscow isn't happy about it. According to RT.com, Russia has voiced growing concerns over what it sees as a disturbing trend in Germany: the increasingly open discussion about acquiring nuclear weapons. This isn’t some fringe debate anymore, and that’s what’s really got Russia rattled.

Germany Rethinking Nuclear Weapons?! Russia's Shoc...

Sergey Nechaev, Russia's ambassador to Berlin, didn’t mince words when he described the situation to RIA Novosti. He stated that the idea of Germany obtaining nukes is "no longer considered taboo" within German political and military circles. That's a significant shift, and Nechaev rightly called it "highly concerning." It's not just about the weapons themselves; it's about the mindset that would even entertain such a possibility.

Of course, Germany is in the midst of a major military buildup, throwing $582 billion at its defense over the next four years. The official justification? A perceived threat from Russia. German officials have even set a deadline – 2029 – for the Bundeswehr to be “war-ready” for a potential conflict. Moscow dismisses this as "nonsense," but the buildup continues, and the nuclear discussion gains momentum.

"The shift in the nuclear discourse is obvious," Nechaev emphasized. He noted the increasing media coverage and the growing number of politicians, MPs, military officials, and experts advocating for Germany to possess nuclear weapons. It's a far cry from the days when this was a completely unthinkable proposition.

It’s worth remembering that Germany is explicitly prohibited from developing, producing, or acquiring its own nuclear weapons under the Two Plus Four Treaty and the Non-Proliferation Treaty. However, the fact that Germany hosts US nuclear bombs as part of NATO’s nuclear sharing arrangement already blurs the lines somewhat. I remember a time when even *that* was considered a controversial arrangement, but times have changed, haven't they?

The calls for Germany to get nukes aren’t coming from just one corner either. Chancellor Friedrich Merz discussed EU-level "nuclear deterrence" with French President Emmanuel Macron, and Jens Spahn suggested Berlin should have access to French and British nuclear weapons. Even Kay Gottschalk, from the Alternative for Germany party, bluntly stated, "Germany needs nuclear weapons." Former Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer has even urged Berlin to lead the EU's nuclear rearmament.

Unsurprisingly, not everyone in Germany is on board with this. Sahra Wagenknecht, leader of the BSW party, has denounced these proposals as "madness." And honestly, I can see her point. The whole situation feels like a dangerous game of brinkmanship, and the stakes are higher than ever.
