Alright, Metal Gear fans, gather 'round. Konami has officially dropped some intel on the highly anticipated *Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2*, and while there's some good news, there's also a bit of a gut punch for those nostalgic for a specific piece of the past.
Metal Gear Online Fans Crushed! MGS Collection 2 N...
The big headline? No, the original *Metal Gear Online* from *Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots* will *not* be making a comeback. That's right, the dedicated multiplayer mode that launched alongside Snake's PS3 adventure back in 2008, complete with its quirky gameplay and even quirkier online community, is staying firmly in the past. It’s a bit of a shame, really. I remember sinking countless hours into that mode back in the day – the tactical gameplay was surprisingly addictive, and the unique modes kept things fresh. The servers were finally shut down in 2012, so it's been quite a while, but the absence will definitely be felt by some die-hard fans.
Now, before you start throwing your controllers at the wall, there's a silver lining. While *MGS4's* online component is absent, the core single-player experience *will* be getting some love. Konami has confirmed that this version of *MGS4* will boast improved internal resolution, a higher maximum framerate, and, thankfully, customizable controls. Let's be honest, those PS3-era control schemes can feel a little clunky by today's standards. So, at least we'll be able to tailor the experience to our liking.
Speaking of silver linings, *Peace Walker* will be bringing back its multiplayer functionality, which is a definite win. It’s unclear whether *Peace Walker* will receive the same visual enhancements as *MGS4*, but at least customizable controls are confirmed. And, while *Ghost Babel*, the bonus Game Boy Color title, won't see the return of its two-player Vs. Battle mode (understandable, given the limitations), it *will* offer screen filters, pixel-perfect screen settings, a rewind function, and, you guessed it, custom controls. So, even the retro offering is getting some modern polish.
Mark your calendars, folks. *Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2* is slated for release on August 27, 2026, for PC (via Steam), Switch (and Switch 2!), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. And, because Konami knows how to tempt us, pre-ordering the game will net you the Cardboard Camouflage for *MGS4* and the Love Box uniform for *Peace Walker*. Plus, players with save data from Vol. 1 will unlock the Gold Camouflage and Gold uniform. So, there's plenty of incentive to jump in and revisit these classics, even if *Metal Gear Online* remains a fond, but inaccessible, memory.
