England fans, hold your breath. The clock is ticking, and the fitness of midfield maestro Jude Bellingham is hanging in the balance as the 2026 World Cup looms ever closer. According to England manager Thomas Tuchel, the Real Madrid star is in a "race against time" to be match-fit for the tournament.

Bellingham, just 22 years old, is currently nursing a hamstring injury, a cruel blow sustained during club duty. While Tuchel hasn't completely ruled him out of the upcoming March international friendlies, there’s a definite air of uncertainty surrounding his participation. Let's be honest, this puts Tuchel in a tricky spot. Does he gamble on reputation, or does he stick to players who are demonstrably fit and ready to go? It's a World Cup year; there's no room for sentimentality, really.

This isn't the first setback Bellingham has faced recently. Remember last summer? He underwent shoulder surgery to finally resolve a long-standing issue. The surgery, thankfully, proved successful, allowing him to regain his peak form, a form that saw him tearing it up in La Liga and the Champions League. Real Madrid were relying on him heavily in their pursuit of silverware.

But then came February 1st. Disaster struck during a Liga clash against Rayo Vallecano. Bellingham was forced off the pitch just 10 minutes into the game, visibly distressed and clutching his leg. Initial reports suggested a five-week layoff, which would have potentially made him available for those crucial March friendlies. However, whispers coming out of Spain now paint a less optimistic picture, suggesting he could be sidelined for a couple of months. Ouch.

Tuchel has acknowledged the very real possibility of having to prepare for the final pre-World Cup friendlies against Uruguay and Japan without one of his key players. These are vital games for ironing out tactics and building team cohesion. To be without Bellingham would be a significant blow. "I would find a place for Jude Bellingham if he’s fit," Tuchel stated plainly. "He’s one of the world’s best players, not only England’s best players." He's not wrong.

The England boss also touched on the potential tactical headache of accommodating multiple attacking midfielders. "A lot depends on whether Tuchel pushes one of those 10s out in a wider position to fit them in. Is there an obvious player on the left that is going to start? There are a few candidates. If two of these No.10s are playing exceptionally well, then could he push someone over onto that left side?" These are the questions every manager wrestles with.

"If everybody is absolutely fit and flying, and playing at their best, then to me Jude Bellingham is the best player for that position in the country. But, there are a few ifs and buts before then." A perfectly honest assessment. Despite the injury worries, Bellingham is widely expected to be included in the England squad regardless of his availability for March. His reputation is just that strong.

England will play two warm-up games in Florida before launching their World Cup campaign against Croatia on June 17. Let's all hope Bellingham is on that plane, firing on all cylinders. The Three Lions, and the entire nation, are counting on him.
