Kingdom Come: Deliverance just got a whole lot prettier, and it's the kind of update that makes you smile. Warhorse Studios has surprised everyone with a free "Next-Gen Update" for the game on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, and honestly, it's exactly what you'd hope for.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance's Next-Gen Update SHOCKS...
Essentially, they've brought the console visuals up to par with the Ultra Quality settings that PC gamers have been enjoying. We're talking a smooth 60 FPS, 4K resolution upscaling, and noticeable improvements to textures and assets. The best part? If you already own Kingdom Come: Deliverance on PlayStation or Xbox, this upgrade is completely free. New players can grab the game for $29.99 on digital storefronts, which, considering the scope of the game, is a pretty sweet deal. Warhorse also revealed that Kingdom Come: Deliverance has surpassed 10 million copies sold – a testament to the game's enduring appeal.
I have to admit, while I was completely engrossed in Kingdom Come: Deliverance II last year (I even ranked it as my second-best game of 2025!), I never actually spent much time with the original. So, diving into this updated version has been a completely fresh experience. And I'm really digging it so far.
What I appreciate most about this update is the restraint Warhorse has shown. It really feels like a remaster done right. The core of the game remains the same, but with a visual polish that makes it feel modern without sacrificing the original artistic vision. Comparing it to the original release, there aren't any drastic changes that feel like they're disrespecting the work done over half a decade ago. This is, in my opinion, how you should approach updating a classic. It's about enhancing, not reinventing.
Think improved performance, crisper resolution, and subtle tweaks in just the right places. Maybe that one knight still looks a little... quirky? That's okay! He's the same quirky knight we saw back in 2018, and that's part of the charm. The gameplay itself is largely untouched, which, while not as refined as the sequel, gives you a great chance to experience the game that started it all, now with a fresh coat of paint. And that's pretty darn cool.
It reminds me of watching the original Dragon Ball Z series instead of Dragon Ball Z Kai. Kai is great, but I wanted the full, unfiltered experience that fans originally had. And honestly, it makes me appreciate Goku's adventures that much more. I'm expecting a similar feeling after finally playing through Kingdom Come: Deliverance on my PS5.
In the meantime, if you're curious, you can check out my review of Kingdom Come: Deliverance II to see why I loved it so much. And if you want to get a feel for what the original was like back in 2018, Game Informer's review is a solid read. You can find the full patch notes detailing all the changes in this update here.
