War Hero's Wife DETAINED?! ICE Arrest SHOCKS Community! What Happens Next?
Current Affairs 13 February 2026

A U.S. Marine war veteran is now in a desperate fight to free his wife after what he calls a shocking turn of events during a routine Immigration interview. Patrick Baja is pleading for help after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested his wife, Diana Butnarciuc, right in the middle of her interview for a permanent resident card. It's a story that highlights the often-unforgiving complexities of our immigration system.

War Hero's Wife DETAINED?! ICE Arrest SHOCKS Commu...

Diana Butnarciuc, originally from Moldova, came to the United States back in 2008, seeking a better life, according to her husband. She's not some criminal mastermind; she's a mother of two, a working woman, and a taxpayer. Yet, she’s currently being held at the Henderson Detention Center, facing a deportation order that dates back to 2018. The situation is even more heartbreaking considering her husband's service to the country.

“I served the country, and you know, I would think that the country would serve us in this instance,” a clearly distressed Baja told reporters. “She’s never been in jail or anything like that, so again this is a brand new thing for her.” It’s the kind of situation that makes you question the system. It’s hard to imagine the emotional toll this is taking on the family.

Baja and Butnarciuc's friends have rallied around them, desperately trying to secure her release. Baja explained that he filed an I-130 petition back in 2020, a crucial step towards obtaining a green card for his wife. The I-130 petition allows a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident to petition for certain family members to immigrate to the United States.

“I totally understand policies and rules and all that, and again that’s why we followed everything to a “T” when it came to the process,” Baja insisted. "As a Marine veteran, I would just like the help." He emphasizes that they were following the rules, trying to navigate the complex legal pathways available. It's a frustrating situation; it seems like the rules don't always deliver justice.

The couple, along with their attorney, were at a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) interview in Las Vegas on Wednesday, an interview they had waited five long years for. But just five minutes into the interview, Baja says, ICE agents entered the room and arrested Diana. “Confusion, very emotional. We knew it was a possibility,” Baja recounted. While they were aware of the potential for this outcome, the shock and devastation of it actually happening must be unimaginable.

The case is particularly perplexing because Butnarciuc initially claimed political asylum upon her arrival in 2008. It remains unclear why the deportation order was issued so many years later, and why it's being enforced now, especially given her husband's service and their attempts to legalize her status. Hopefully, with enough attention on this case, a fair resolution can be reached.
