Michelle Yeoh, fresh off her Oscar win and now the recipient of the Berlinale's honorary Golden Bear, hasn't forgotten the hurdles she's overcome, or the work that still needs to be done. At a press conference this morning in Berlin, the actress addressed the ever-present issue of Asian representation in Hollywood, pulling no punches about the ongoing struggle.

Michelle Yeoh's Hollywood Struggle: Will She Retur...

"It continues to be a struggle," Yeoh stated plainly when asked about progress in the industry. She didn't sugarcoat it, adding with a touch of weary wisdom, "I don’t think issues like that go away overnight.” It's a sentiment that resonates deeply, having witnessed firsthand the slow, often frustrating pace of change within the entertainment world.

Yeoh recounted a particularly telling anecdote from the production of "Crazy Rich Asians" back in 2018. Despite the film's eventual success, she and her colleagues were initially met with skepticism. "We ticked all the wrong boxes," she recalled being told. Imagine being told you're *wrong* simply for existing and wanting to tell a story. It's frankly infuriating, and underscores the systemic biases that persist.

Of course, Yeoh also expressed immense gratitude to the creative forces behind her recent triumph, "Everything Everywhere All at Once." She praised directors Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan, saying, "I was eternally grateful to my two Daniels, my little geniuses, for being bold and courageous to do that film because once again, we ticked all the wrong boxes, but we prevailed." Their willingness to take a chance on a story that broke the mold clearly meant the world to her.

But Yeoh hasn't forgotten her roots. Reflecting on her early career in the hard-hitting world of Hong Kong action cinema, she offered words of support and solidarity to struggling filmmakers in the region. "I will always have a soft spot and a place in my heart for Hong Kong cinema," she declared. Recognizing that the global industry is "facing a rough time," she pledged to actively support Hong Kong filmmakers and even plans to "go back and make a movie" there this year. That’s fantastic news for the Hong Kong film industry, a sector that has definitely seen better days. It's wonderful to see her give back like this.

Finally, in another exciting bit of news, Yeoh revealed she’s currently collaborating with Chinese filmmaker Frant Gwo on a third installment in "The Wandering Earth" franchise. So, between Hollywood, Hong Kong, and China, it seems Michelle Yeoh has no intention of slowing down anytime soon. The world will be watching, that's for sure.
