Trump's Climate Rule REVERSAL: What Will Happen Next?!
Current Affairs 12 February 2026

Well folks, here we go again. President Trump has just thrown a major wrench into the works of US Climate policy, and it's a move that's sure to send shockwaves through environmental circles and the legal system alike. He's officially rescinded the 2009 "endangerment finding," the very foundation upon which so many of our greenhouse gas regulations have been built.

Now, for those not steeped in the minutiae of environmental law, this "endangerment finding" basically said that greenhouse gases pose a threat to public health and welfare. Originally, it was targeted at vehicle emissions, but it quickly became the legal cornerstone for a much broader range of climate regulations. Think power plants, industrial facilities – the whole shebang. Now, with this finding gone, all of those regulations are suddenly looking very shaky.

The reasoning behind this decision, according to the draft proposal, is… well, it's interesting, to say the least. The argument is that greenhouse gases shouldn't be treated like your run-of-the-mill pollutants. They're not causing localized smog, for instance. Their impact is indirect and, crucially, global. The administration is essentially saying that trying to regulate these gases within US borders is a futile effort because it doesn't really address the global nature of the problem. I can see where they're coming from, but the implications are huge.

And here's the kicker: the Supreme Court has repeatedly upheld this endangerment finding. In fact, as recently as 2022, the court reaffirmed its validity. And get this, the court's composition back then was exactly the same as it is now. So, you have to wonder what's changed. Are they betting on a different legal interpretation this time around? It’s a bold gamble, that's for sure.

This move is guaranteed to trigger immediate legal challenges. Environmental groups are already sharpening their legal swords, and I suspect several states will jump into the fray as well. We're talking about years of legal battles, potentially going all the way back to the Supreme Court. Regardless of the outcome, this decision introduces considerable uncertainty and delays any cohesive action on climate change. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how this all unfolds, but buckle up, because it's going to be a bumpy ride.
