Copenhagen's annual CPH:DOX festival, a heavyweight in the documentary world, just dropped its competition lineup for 2026, and it's packed. Fifty-three world premieres, seventeen international debuts, and four European premieres – that's a whole lot of fresh content heading to the Danish capital. The highlight, of course, is the DOX:AWARD, boasting a €10,000 prize for the winning filmmaker.

The DOX:AWARD competition itself features twelve films, each making their world debut. It's a bold move – putting so much faith in undiscovered talent. Among the names to watch are Rati Tsiteladze with *A Song Without Home*, Otilia Portillo's *Daughters of the Forest: Mycelium Chronicles*, Rachel Taparjan’s *Something Familiar*, and Kenya-Jade Pinto’s *The Sandbox*. I'll be honest, I haven't seen any of these yet, but the titles alone pique my interest.

This year, CPH:DOX is also introducing the FIPRESCI Award, courtesy of the International Federation of Film Critics. All twelve DOX:AWARD nominees are eligible, which adds another layer of prestige to the already competitive field. And that's not all! The festival will showcase films nominated for the 2026 Doc Alliance Award, in collaboration with a network of seven key European festivals. Seems like they are really trying to connect all the dots with this one, and it shows.

Niklas Engstrøm, the Artistic Director for CPH:DOX, hit the nail on the head when he talked about the current state of the world. "We are living through a period in which the frameworks that once felt stable – political, moral, even cognitive – are shifting beneath our feet," he said. He believes documentary cinema offers something vital in these times: "a space for sustained attention." Engstrøm emphasized that the films selected resist easy answers, embracing complexity and the inherent dignity of lived experience.

Mads K. Mikkelsen, Head of Program, echoed this sentiment, calling documentary an art form. He highlighted the lineup's critical and creative reflection on "the troubled times we live in," exploring cinematic possibilities "in a spirit of humanism, solidarity and poetry." I think it's safe to say CPH:DOX is positioning itself as more than just a film festival; it's aiming to be a platform for meaningful dialogue and reflection. Can't wait to see if the films live up to the hype.

For those interested in specifics, *A Song Without Home* is directed and produced by Rati Tsiteladze and Olga Slusareva, hailing from Georgia and the United States. *Daughters of the Forest: Mycelium Chronicles* comes from Mexico and the US, directed by Otilia Portillo and produced by Paula Arroio and Elena Fortes. *Something Familiar* is a Romanian-UK co-production directed by Rachel Taparjan and produced by Monica Lăzurean-Gorgan and Elena Martin. *The Sandbox*, directed by Kenya-Jade Pinto and produced by Shasha Nakhai and Pinto themselves, rounds out this initial glimpse into the DOX:AWARD contenders.
