For a while there, it felt like South Indian cinema was the only game in town when it came to the Indian box office. Year after year, *Baahubali*, *K.G.F.*, and *Pushpa* kept raking in the rupees. But hold on, folks, because Bollywood's back! According to a recent report from Ormax Media, Hindi films staged a major comeback in 2025, boosting overall box office revenue by a whopping 18% to reach a record $609.78 million (Rs55 billion).
Bollywood vs. Hollywood! 'Toxic' & 'Dhurandhar 2' ...
And it wasn't just homegrown movies doing well. Hollywood also had a stellar year. Non-Indian films, mostly from the US, saw their revenues jump by an impressive 49%, hitting $155 million (Rs14 billion). Disney's *Avatar: Fire And Ash* led the charge, proving that the Na'vi still have a powerful draw, even in India. All told, India's total box office soared to an all-time high of $1.48 billion (Rs133.95 billion) last year, surpassing the previous record set in 2023.
I recently had the chance to read through an interview with Ormax founder and CEO Shailesh Kapoor, who shed some light on these trends. Kapoor pointed out that the South Indian film industry's dominance had somewhat waned due to a less impactful release schedule in 2025. "In 2024, two major South Indian films alone contributed around 20% to the overall box office," he explained. "In 2025, several big South Indian films underperformed, and there were no franchise films on the scale of *Pushpa* or *K.G.F.*"
Kapoor also emphasized that the re-emergence of diverse genres is breathing new life into the Hindi film scene. Apparently, Mumbai studios had been experiencing a bit of an identity crisis, unsure of what audiences wanted. This led to a slowdown in production, with some films being diverted to streaming platforms. But 2025 changed the game, especially the latter half, with a steady stream of films hitting theaters. Now, everyone is waiting for the box office showdown of the year. Sources indicate the Hindi Movie "Toxic" and the South Indian Movie "Dhurandhar 2" are to release on the same day. Expect some fireworks!
*Avatar: Fire And Ash* proved to be a global phenomenon, securing the eighth spot overall in the Indian market, earning $26.48 million (Rs2.39 billion). Several other international titles, including *F1: The Movie*, *Jurassic World Rebirth*, *Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning*, and *The Conjuring: Last Rites*, crossed the $11 million (Rs1 billion) mark, suggesting a healthy appetite for international blockbusters.
An interesting tidbit is the success of *Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle*. The animated film earned approximately $10 million, hinting at a potential niche market for Japanese anime within the Indian box office. Could anime become the next big thing? Only time will tell.
While the overall box office growth is certainly positive, Kapoor cautioned that rising ticket prices are playing a significant role. Attendance actually declined by 6% to 832 million compared to the previous year. Average ticket prices jumped by 20% to $1.78 (Rs161), up from $1.48 (Rs134). This price hike, Kapoor noted, was primarily driven by the South, where some regulations on ticket pricing have been relaxed. So, while the numbers look great, let's not forget to factor in the cost of admission!
