The LA28 board's decision to stand by Casey Wasserman as head of the Olympics, despite the resurfacing of his connections to the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, is generating a firestorm of controversy here in Los Angeles. The move is drawing sharp criticism, most recently from mayoral hopeful and current City Councilmember Nithya Raman.
LA Mayoral Candidate "Disappointed"! LA28's Epstei...
"I am disappointed by the decision made by the LA28 Board’s Executive Committee to continue their contract with Casey Wasserman," Raman stated late Wednesday. It's a strong statement, reflecting a growing unease among many Angelenos.
The board, a veritable who's who of LA power players including Jeffrey Katzenberg, Jessica Alba, former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, and Lakers' owner Jeanie Buss, doubled down on their support for Wasserman in an emergency meeting. This, of course, comes after the release of more Epstein files, and the renewed scrutiny on Wasserman's interactions with Ghislaine Maxwell. It really begs the question - what are they seeing that the rest of us aren't?
Wasserman, as founder of a major sports marketing and talent agency, is no stranger to navigating tricky situations. But the emails between him and Maxwell, released as part of the massive DOJ document dump on January 30th, seem to have struck a nerve. These revelations definitely change the landscape.
His team, less than 24 hours after the release and right before Wasserman was set to head to the Winter Olympics in Italy, scrambled to issue a statement. The statement conveyed that the executive was "terribly sorry for having any association" with Epstein and Maxwell. Some might say it was a little late to the party.
"Wasserman’s apparent relationship with the architect of Epstein’s sickening exploitation is not only a distraction from the urgent and overdue work ahead of preparing for the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic games, but a complete breach of the values we hold as a city," Raman, who represents the 4th District, argued. It's worth remembering Raman's background as executive director of Time’s Up Entertainment before entering the political arena. She understands the optics of this.
And Raman isn't alone in her opposition. Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez, another DSA member and a recent challenger to Mayor Karen Bass, has joined the call for Wasserman's removal. It's a powerful coalition building against Wasserman.
They're in good company, too. LA County Supervisors Janice Hahn and Lindsey Horvath, along with several other City Council members and City Controller Kenneth Mejia, are all demanding Wasserman's resignation. The pressure is undeniably mounting.
"Casey Wasserman is attempting to deflect and avoid answering the real question at hand: what was his relationship with Ghislane Maxwell, a convicted sex trafficker?" Soto-Martinez, who represents the 13th District, stated plainly. "The public deserves full transparency. Unless he’s ready to come forward and give clear and complete answers, Casey Wasserman should step aside." It seems like the question now is not if, but how long can Wasserman hold on amidst such fierce opposition?
