Spring Training is in full swing, the smell of hot dogs is in the air, and teams are hustling to finalize their rosters before Opening Day. As a baseball fan myself, it's always an exciting time, and this year is no different – albeit with a few more injury concerns than we'd like to see.
Castellanos Trade Imminent?! MLB Spring Training B...
The biggest news of the morning? It sounds like Nick Castellanos's time in Philadelphia is coming to an end. According to sources at The Athletic, the Phillies are actively trying to trade the right fielder, and a deal could be struck within the next 48 hours. Castellanos, a two-time All-Star and Silver Slugger Award winner, has been excused from spring training activities while the team works towards a resolution. The Phillies faithful have had a rollercoaster relationship with Castellanos, and it'll be interesting to see where he lands next.
Meanwhile, in the Big Apple, Mets fans are holding their breath regarding Francisco Lindor. The star shortstop underwent surgery Wednesday to repair a broken hamate bone in his left hand. Hamate injuries are notoriously tricky for hitters. The typical recovery timeline is around six weeks. But manager Carlos Mendoza seems optimistic, saying, "Knowing Lindor, I’m not gonna bet against him." Lindor's toughness is well-documented, but rushing back from surgery could be risky. Hopefully, the Mets are prioritizing his long-term health.
Over in Houston, things aren’t looking so hot for Josh Hader. The Astros' new closer is dealing with arm soreness and bicep inflammation, putting his Opening Day status in serious doubt, per The Athletic. Hader is a dominant force on the mound, but shoulder issues shortened his 2025 season. The Astros are banking on him being a key piece of their bullpen. This is definitely a situation to monitor closely.
It's not all good news in Arizona either. Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll is set to miss the World Baseball Classic after fracturing his right hamate bone during batting practice. He underwent surgery Wednesday, with a potential absence lasting into the start of the MLB season. He will be missed during the WBC.
Adding to the hamate woes, Baltimore Orioles second baseman Jackson Holliday will also be sidelined after fracturing his right hamate bone during batting practice. He will undergo surgery Thursday. And, to make matters a bit more complicated for the O's, third baseman Jordan Westburg is recovering from an oblique injury, potentially delaying his spring training participation.
Finally, Blue Jays fans will be disappointed to learn that outfielder Anthony Santander is set to miss five to six months following left labral surgery. That's a tough blow for Toronto. It's a reminder of just how fragile a baseball season can be. Here's hoping for speedy recoveries for all of these players and a thrilling, injury-free season ahead!
