Overwatch is back, and it's bigger than ever on Steam. Blizzard's hero shooter, now officially embarking on what they're calling a "story-driven era" – a phrase that's admittedly got my attention – isn't just matching the initial hype from its previous launch under the "Overwatch 2" moniker. It's absolutely crushing it.
Overwatch 2 SHOCKS! Player Count DOUBLES! Can It L...
The numbers don't lie. The game has more than doubled its previous concurrent player peak on Steam, a record that was set back in 2023. That's a pretty significant jump, and it shows that there's a lot of pent-up demand and interest in what Blizzard is doing with the franchise. Honestly, I've been following this game since the original launch, and the peaks and valleys of player engagement have been… well, dramatic, to say the least.
This explosion of players seems directly tied to yesterday's launch (February 10th) of "The Reign of Talon," which is being touted as the game's first year-long storyline. Remember that initial Steam launch? Overwatch hit a concurrent peak of 75,608 players then. This time? Forget about it. We saw an early spike over the weekend, with a Sunday peak of 69,135, but it's nothing compared to what happened overnight. SteamDB is reporting a staggering 165,651 concurrent Steam players. That’s a strong start for any game, let alone a "rebooted" one.
So, what's drawing everyone back in? It seems like a multi-pronged approach. We've got new heroes like Domina (tank), Emre (damage), Mizuki (support), Anran (damage), and, of course, the internet darling, Jetpack Cat (support). I mean, come on, Jetpack Cat? They know their audience. And the promise of even more heroes coming in future seasons (one per season from Season 2 through Season 6) is a smart move to keep players engaged. Blizzard is even teasing a new story arc kicking off with another "Season 1" in 2027, which is a long way off, but hey, at least they have a roadmap.
But the content doesn’t stop there! From February 10-23, there is a Hello Kitty-themed in-game event. (My daughter is going to lose her mind.) Players can also participate in a new Meta Event called Conquest. For five weeks, players align themselves with Overwatch or Talon to compete for rewards. Think lootboxes, skins, and titles. It's all about that sweet, sweet digital loot!
Finally, they’re revamping the UI and UX. A new hero lobby is on the way, and they are promising faster navigation. Anyone who's tried to navigate the menus in the past knows this is desperately needed. All in all, it looks like Blizzard is throwing everything they have at this relaunch. Let's see if they can keep the momentum going this time around.
