Indie darlings SFB Games, the creative minds behind last year's surprise hit *Crow Country*, just dropped a bombshell: they're gearing up to release a new detective mystery game called *The Mermaid Mask* this summer. And frankly, after the phenomenal job they did with both *Crow Country* and the critically acclaimed *Tangle Tower*, I'm already clearing my schedule.
Crow Country's Mermaid Mask: A Detective Game Like...
For those unfamiliar, SFB Games carved out a niche for themselves with *Tangle Tower*, a delightfully quirky point-and-click adventure that launched back in 2019. Think vibrant visuals, clever puzzles, and a murder mystery that keeps you guessing until the very end. It practically oozes charm, and the "Overwhelmingly Positive" reception it received on Steam is a testament to its quality.
*The Mermaid Mask* looks to be a direct successor, falling under the Detective Grimoire banner. This time, you'll be diving deep (pun intended!) into the mysterious death of a legendary submarine captain. Expect more of that signature SFB Games wit and brain-teasing challenges as you unravel the secrets surrounding his demise.
What's particularly exciting is the voice cast they've assembled. Edwyn Tiong, known for his work on *Loco Motive* and *Harold Halibut*, is lending his talents, alongside Amber Lee Connors, a voice acting powerhouse with credits including *Demon Slayer* and *The Outer Worlds 2*. And, tantalizingly, they've promised more casting announcements are on the way. Color me intrigued!
"We've been working on *The Mermaid Mask* for a long time – never before have we poured so much love and care into a single project, and it's become something quite remarkable," said creative director Adam Vian. That's a bold statement, but knowing SFB Games' track record, I'm inclined to believe him. He also addressed the success of *Crow Country*, acknowledging it briefly "diverted" their attention – a "good problem to have," he admits.
And here's the best part for newcomers: Vian stresses that *The Mermaid Mask* is a "self-contained" story. You don't need to have played *Tangle Tower* to jump right in and enjoy the mystery. That's always a welcome move, ensuring that anyone can pick up the game and get lost in its world.
Of course, we can't forget the splash *Crow Country* made last year. Sure, the PS1-era graphics were a major draw, tapping into that sweet nostalgia, but as we pointed out in our review, the game was so much more than just a throwback. It was genuinely funny, self-aware, and, most importantly, incredibly addictive. Bottom line: SFB Games has earned our trust. A demo for *The Mermaid Mask* is already available on Steam. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a mystery to solve.
