India's SHOCK Move! Is This the End of Global Trade as We Know It?
Current Affairs 11 February 2026

India is making some serious moves on the global trade stage, and it's looking like they're playing their cards right. Fresh off the heels of wrapping up negotiations with the European Union, India just announced an interim trade framework with the United States, signaling a clear strategy to diversify its economic partnerships. This comes at a crucial time, as global trade waters remain choppy. It's a bit like watching a chess grandmaster anticipate multiple moves ahead.

The deal with the U.S., announced just last week, aims to ease tensions that have been simmering for months. Under the agreement, the U.S. will reduce tariffs on certain Indian exports from as high as 50% down to a more manageable 18%. In return, well, things get a little murkier. The U.S. claims India will halt its purchases of Russian oil, while India has remained conspicuously silent on that front. They will also ease certain trade barriers. The interesting thing is the speed at which this framework materialized. Some experts are suggesting that the EU deal acted as a bit of a catalyst, pushing the U.S. to come to the table.

“I think it (sent) a message to the U.S. that there are other partners," noted Harsh Pant, vice president of studies and foreign policy at the Observer Research Foundation. He added, "The Indian economy has been resilient." That's a key point. India's economy is a significant draw, even for a country like the U.S. that's seemingly leaning towards more protectionist policies. It's a delicate balancing act, for sure.

While exporters are generally happy about the U.S. trade framework, some analysts are urging caution. And rightly so. The devil is always in the details, and that 18% tariff, while a reduction, still applies to key Indian exports like textiles and leather goods. So, there's still work to be done. The agreement also states that India will eliminate or reduce tariffs on US industrial goods, along with a range of foods.

And what about the EU deal? Experts say it could take months before that agreement actually comes into effect, and even then, the immediate impact might be limited. "However, it is a mental assurance … that probably protectionism will not take place and there will be no rollback of the current regime,” one analyst noted. It's about sending a message, ensuring stability in an uncertain world.

Beyond trade, India's relationship with the EU is deepening strategically. India is only the third Asian country to have a defense partnership with the bloc, which says a lot about where things are headed. Some analysts believe this signals the EU's intention to fill a void left by shifting U.S. policies, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region. However, there are constraints, as the EU lacks the capacity to fill the US position.

“I think in the short term, it will be very difficult,” said Pant. It's a long game, and India seems to be playing it with a clear strategy in mind: diversify, strengthen partnerships, and leverage its economic might. Whether this strategy will be successful is yet to be seen.
