Las Vegas, NV – The air in the Raiders' headquarters was thick with history and expectation on Tuesday as Klint Kubiak was officially introduced as the team's new head coach. You could practically feel the weight of those three Lombardi Trophies displayed so prominently in the room, a constant reminder of the glory days and the current playoff drought that stretches back to 2002.
Kubiak's Raiders Plan: Will Maxx Crosby Stay or Go...
Kubiak wasn't alone on stage. Six Raiders legends, including Hall of Famers and Super Bowl champions, flanked him and General Manager John Spytek. This wasn't just a press conference; it was a symbolic passing of the torch, a reminder of the Raiders' rich legacy and the enormous pressure Kubiak now faces to restore the franchise to its former glory. The Raiders haven't exactly been contenders lately, and the fans are hungry for a return to the top.
"This is no ordinary job," Kubiak said, his words resonating with the gravity of the occasion. Having just come off a Super Bowl win as offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks (a team that shockingly defeated Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in the Super Bowl, I might add), Kubiak certainly knows what it takes to get to the top. "This is the silver and black. This is the Raiders. This is a historic franchise. So when the opportunity came up...to have a chance to come here and compete with this organization, it was a no-brainer."
Of course, parades and celebrations aside, the real work starts now. Kubiak faces a daunting offseason. He needs to assemble a top-notch coaching staff, figure out what to do with that coveted No. 1 overall draft pick, and navigate a complex salary-cap situation. And then there's the Maxx Crosby situation. Crosby is the heart and soul of that Raiders defense, and his future with the team is something everyone's watching closely. The Raiders' front office is also betting on Kubiak's work with quarterback Sam Darnold to carry over with the new Raiders QB. Darnold, once a perceived bust, became a bona fide star under Kubiak, leading the Seahawks to a Super Bowl victory. Can Kubiak work that magic again in Vegas?
Raiders owner Mark Davis made it clear they were looking for a coach with an offensive background "that could grow with somebody." He, along with Spytek and even minority owner Tom Brady, closely observed Kubiak's work with Darnold. The decision wasn't just handed to Kubiak, though. Davis emphasized he "had to win the job" against other strong candidates.
"I’m really proud of the process that we put in place," Spytek added. "We set out to take our time, to be deliberate, to be meticulous, to find the right leader for this organization going forward. We have a uniquely challenging offseason with the first overall pick and new leadership with the head coach, but that’s why it was so important to us to find the right man to lead this organization forward." The pressure's on, Klint. The Silver and Black faithful are watching.
