Mercedes-AMG C53 SHOCK! 6-Cylinder Spotted - What Will Happen Next?!

Finally, some good news for AMG enthusiasts! It appears Mercedes-AMG has heard the cries of loyalists and is reportedly scrapping the much-maligned four-cylinder hybrid powertrain in favor of a good old-fashioned six-cylinder engine. And, thankfully, they're also ditching the "C63" nameplate, opting for the return of the more sensible "C53." I, for one, am thrilled. The C63 name felt almost sacrilegious attached to that four-pot.

Mercedes-AMG C53 SHOCK! 6-Cylinder Spotted - What ...

Fresh spy shots have emerged, giving us a tantalizing peek at what's to come. While Mercedes is keeping the exact design details under wraps with camouflage on the front and rear bumpers, eagle-eyed observers (namely, @skyler_wu, as reported by Motor1) managed to snag some revealing glimpses. The iconic Panamericana grille is clearly visible, along with a wide lower grille opening and prominent air intakes pushed to the outer edges of the bumper. It's got that aggressive AMG stance we all know and love.

Beyond the camouflaged bits, we can expect updated lighting elements both front and rear, which is pretty standard fare for a mid-cycle refresh. The meaty tires, measuring 265/35 up front and 275/35 at the rear, are wrapped around sizable 20-inch wheels. That rubber should help put the power down effectively, and certainly contributes to the car's overall presence.

Interior shots suggest a relatively minor evolution, thankfully. The large infotainment screen remains prominently positioned below the three central air vents – a design element that's become a Mercedes signature. Unfortunately, the steering wheel was covered in the spy shots, so we're still in the dark about whether it will feature a model-specific AMG design. Fingers crossed for some Alcantara and a flat bottom!

So, what's under the hood? The C53 is expected to borrow the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine from the CLE 53. In the coupé, this M256M engine cranks out a healthy 450 hp (approximately 326 kW) and 560 Nm of torque. The big question is whether Mercedes-AMG will massage those figures further for the sedan, or leave them as is. My bet is on a slight bump, just to differentiate it.

Now, let's be realistic. Even with a potential power increase, the C53 won't quite match the sheer brute force of the outgoing C63's four-cylinder hybrid system, which boasted a mind-boggling 680 hp (approximately 494 kW) and 1,020 Nm of torque. However, consider this: the purely gasoline-powered C53 sheds the significant weight of the hybrid system. This should translate to a more balanced and, dare I say, more enjoyable driving experience. While it might not win every drag race, I suspect the C53 will ultimately be the more rewarding car to own and drive day-to-day. Bring on the inline-six!
