Hold on to your hats, detective drama fans! BritBox and ITV are shaking things up with a fresh take on the classic "Dalziel and Pascoe," and the casting news is already generating buzz. This time around, we're getting a female-led duo, with Kerry Godliman and Nina Singh taking on the iconic roles.
Dalziel & Pascoe REBOOT! Will Fans Embrace This Sh...
For those unfamiliar, "Dalziel and Pascoe" originally graced our screens courtesy of the BBC, running for a solid 12 seasons. It was based on the popular novels by Reginald Hill. The original actors, Warren Clarke and Colin Buchanan, certainly left their mark, but this reimagining promises a completely new dynamic.
Godliman, known for her brilliant work in "After Life," will play Detective Inspector Andrea Dalziel. Singh, who impressed in "Virdee," steps into the shoes of Detective Sergeant Paige Pascoe. The premise remains the same at its core: two detectives with wildly different approaches to solving crimes. Dalziel, we're told, is seasoned, perhaps a little rough around the edges, but undeniably good at her job. Pascoe, on the other hand, is meticulous and by-the-book. It's a classic pairing, and I’m already picturing the sparks (and likely, the arguments) that will fly.
What I find particularly interesting is how the writers plan to navigate the humor within the serious crime stories. Singh herself mentioned the seamless integration of comedy and suspense in the scripts. This delicate balance is key to a successful detective series – it needs to be engaging, but also allow for moments of levity. I think most of us need a good laugh amidst the grim realities that these shows often portray.
Behind the scenes, West Road Pictures (backed by All3Media) is producing this six-part series. Colette Kane ("Department Q") and Daisy Martey ("Vikings: Valhalla") are co-creating the show. With experienced writers like Chris Ryden, Jon Rowe, and Danusia Samal ("Gangs of London") also contributing, the creative team seems well-equipped to deliver a compelling narrative. The executive producers include Jonathan Fisher, Ellie Birnie, and Ingrid Goodwin from West Road Pictures, along with Jon Farrar, Stephen Nye, and Lucie Wolfman for BritBox, and Polly Hill and Nana Hughes for ITV.
For those eager to tune in, "Dalziel and Pascoe" will be available for streaming on BritBox in the U.S. and Canada. ITV will broadcast the series in the UK. Production is scheduled to commence this spring, so we shouldn't have too long to wait. This reboot has the potential to be something special, and I'm personally keen to see how Godliman and Singh bring these characters to life. It's a brave move reimagining such a popular series, but I'm cautiously optimistic that this new "Dalziel and Pascoe" will be a hit.
