NJ House Race SHOCKER: Malinowski CONCEDES! What Happens Now?!
Politics 10 February 2026

Well, folks, it looks like the winds of change are blowing through New Jersey. Former Congressman Tom Malinowski has conceded to Analilia Mejia in a pretty tight Democratic primary race for the U.S. House special election. This seat, as you probably know, opened up when Mikie Sherrill decided to pursue the governorship. It's a special election, so things have been moving quickly.

Malinowski, to his credit, released a statement saying he'll be supporting Mejia in the upcoming April general election. Classy move, I have to say. The AP hasn’t officially called it yet, though. We're still waiting on all those mail-in ballots to be tallied in Essex, Morris, and Passaic counties. You know how it is these days – every vote counts, and they’re making sure they get it right. Ballots postmarked by election day have until tomorrow to arrive, so the suspense continues!

Now, Analilia Mejia isn't exactly a new face on the scene. At 48, she’s a seasoned progressive activist. She’s got some serious cred with the progressive wing of the Democratic party, having previously served as Bernie Sanders' political director during his 2020 run. Before that, she was the director of the Working Families Alliance here in New Jersey. She even had a stint as deputy director of the Labor Department's Women's Bureau under President Biden. Safe to say, she knows her way around the political landscape. It probably didn’t hurt her chances that she got endorsements from big names like Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Looking ahead, Mejia is set to face Republican Joe Hathaway in the special general election on April 16th. Hathaway ran unopposed in the Republican primary, so he’s been waiting in the wings, ready for a fight. This race is going to be interesting, to say the least. The district itself is pretty diverse, encompassing parts of Essex, Morris, and Passaic counties. We're talking about everything from urban centers to some pretty affluent New York City suburbs, so there are a lot of different viewpoints to consider.

It’s worth noting that there were a whole bunch of other candidates vying for the Democratic nomination as well – John Bartlett, Zach Beecher, J-L Cauvin, Marc Chaaban, Cammie Croft, Dean Dafis, Jeff Grayzel, Justin Strickland, and Anna Lee Williams. It just goes to show you how much interest there was in this race. Now, the question is, can Mejia carry her momentum into the general election? And will Hathaway be able to capitalize on any potential divisions within the Democratic party? Only time will tell, but you can bet I'll be keeping a close eye on this one. Stay tuned!
