Democrats Target 5 More Seats! Can They Seize Control?!
Current Affairs 10 February 2026

House Democrats are feeling bullish these days, at least if you listen to their campaign arm. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) announced Tuesday they're expanding their target list, adding five more Republican-held House seats to their sights for the 2026 midterms.

Democrats Target 5 More Seats! Can They Seize Cont...

This isn't just some arbitrary move. The DCCC is specifically targeting districts where Donald Trump's 2024 performance was within a 13-point margin. They're pointing to recent Democratic victories in special elections as evidence of a shift in the political landscape, a "sustained, dramatically positive political environment," as they put it.

“Democrats are on offense, and our map reflects the fact that everyday Americans are tired of Republicans’ broken promises and ready for change in Congress," stated DCCC Chair Rep. Suzan DelBene. It's campaign rhetoric, sure, but it signals a clear strategy.

So, which districts are now in the crosshairs? Colorado's 5th, currently held by Rep. Jeff Crank, and Minnesota’s 1st, held by Rep. Brad Finstad, are on the list. Virginia’s 5th, represented by Rep. John McGuire, is also a target, although its inclusion carries a bit of an asterisk. The Democratic-controlled state legislature might redraw the district lines, potentially making it more favorable for a Democratic challenger. Of course, that redistricting effort is still facing potential hurdles.

The final addition is South Carolina’s 1st. This one's opening up because the incumbent, Rep. Nancy Mace, is running for governor. An open seat always presents a prime opportunity for a flip.

The DCCC isn't just adding names to a list. They're putting money where their mouth is, launching "nominee funds" to support the eventual Democratic nominee in each of these target districts. While they typically avoid endorsing candidates during primaries, this financial support will undoubtedly be crucial.

Now, let's be realistic. While recent special election results and some polling data have given Democrats a glimmer of hope, flipping these seats won't be easy. The Cook Political Report currently rates all five districts as either leaning or solidly Republican. And remember, Democrats need to net only 3 seats to regain control of the House, assuming all current vacancies are filled by members of the same party. Republicans, naturally, are aiming to expand their own majority. So, the battle lines are drawn, and 2026 is shaping up to be a pivotal election cycle.
