Liverpool manager Arne Slot didn't mince words. He's calling this season "by a mile" the toughest of his entire managerial career. Coming from someone who replaced the legendary Jurgen Klopp, and initially delivered a record-equalling 20th top-flight title, that's quite a statement.
Slot's SHOCKING Confession: Is This His LAST Seaso...
The Reds are currently sitting a rather un-Liverpool-like sixth in the Premier League, a worrying four points adrift of Chelsea for a Champions League spot. They only narrowly avoided falling below Brentford, thanks to a late, and controversial, disallowed goal for Manchester City last weekend. It's a far cry from the dominance we've come to expect at Anfield.
Despite a massive summer spending spree – close to £450 million! – including splashing a British record £125 million on Alexander Isak, the team just isn't clicking. Their record stands at a mediocre 11 wins, six draws, and eight losses. It's clear something isn't working. I remember thinking at the start of the season that Slot had a real chance to build on Klopp's legacy, but the new signings haven't gelled as quickly as anyone hoped.
"By a mile, this has been the toughest season," Slot confessed to BBC Sport. "In all my other seasons managing, there were only positives. I don't think I have ever lost two games in a row until now. It's an exception for me, I am not used to it. The players know what the standards of Liverpool mean, and we aren't performing to those standards. They feel that disappointment."
It's not just about results; it’s the pressure of living up to the Liverpool badge. Slot had previously hinted that improvement in one area might salvage an acceptable season, but improvement in both would be needed for a special one. Now, he's singing a different tune. He now believes his side needs to be "close to perfection" to secure that crucial Champions League qualification.
The stakes are undeniably high. "If we don't have Champions League football next season, it's definitely not been an acceptable season," Slot stated bluntly. He also pointed to the financial implications of missing out: "When I arrived here and only signed Federico Chiesa, it was after a Europa League season. That does have an enormous impact on the way this club is run. I am completely aware of that."
To make matters worse, Liverpool are facing a tough away trip to Sunderland, who are currently unbeaten at home. Slot is also grappling with a potential crisis at right-back. Dominik Szoboszlai is suspended, Conor Bradley is out for the season, Jeremie Frimpong is sidelined, and even Joe Gomez is carrying a knock. Add to that the long-term absences of Isak and Leoni, and you've got a real headache brewing. You almost feel sorry for the guy.
Despite the challenges, Slot remains defiant. "It's different to lead the team after a loss or multiple losses and draws than a win, but I don't think anybody in this building thinks I've completely changed," he insisted. "There's still a possibility where we can do something special this season." Let's see if he can turn things around - Liverpool fans will certainly be hoping for a miracle.
