World Cup SHOCKER: Bangladesh Asks Pakistan to Face India?!
Sports 09 February 2026

Cricket diplomacy can be a funny thing, and the latest twist in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup is a prime example. Bangladesh, after initially withdrawing from matches scheduled in India, has now urged Pakistan to reconsider its potential boycott of their own match against India. Seems like a bit of a U-turn, doesn't it?

World Cup SHOCKER: Bangladesh Asks Pakistan to Fac...

The whole saga began, as these things often do, with political tensions. Pakistan's government reportedly advised their cricket team against playing India, supposedly in a show of solidarity with Bangladesh. Bangladesh had wanted their matches moved out of India, but when that request was denied, they pulled out entirely. Prime Minister Sharif even publicly stated the initial boycott decision was to "support" Bangladesh. A noble gesture, perhaps, but one that threatened to throw a major wrench in the World Cup schedule.

However, after some behind-the-scenes wheeling and dealing – a meeting in Lahore involving the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the International Cricket Council (ICC), and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) – things appear to have shifted. BCB President Ameenul Islam apparently pleaded with Pakistan to proceed with the match "for the benefit of the entire cricket ecosystem." A bit dramatic, perhaps, but he's right – the India-Pakistan match is always a huge draw, and its absence would be felt by everyone.

Islam went on to add, somewhat effusively, "We are deeply moved by Pakistan's efforts to go above and beyond in supporting Bangladesh during this period. Long may our brotherhood flourish." Strong words, and a clear indication that bridges are being built, or at least attempts are being made. The match, incidentally, is slated for Colombo, Sri Lanka, a joint host of the tournament alongside India, so the location itself shouldn't be an issue.

The ICC, unsurprisingly, is playing it cool. While not outright confirming that the match will definitely go ahead, they released a statement confirming that Bangladesh won't face any sanctions for their initial boycott. Interestingly, the statement also slipped in that Bangladesh will be hosting an ICC event sometime between 2028 and the start of the 2031 World Cup. A little sweetener, perhaps?

The ICC statement continued with the usual diplomatic fluff about "continued dialogue, cooperation and constructive engagement" and protecting the "integrity of the game." It all sounds very nice, but the real takeaway is that everyone's trying to avoid a major crisis. The specific event Bangladesh will host remains a mystery, though. All the men's events are locked down until 2031, and Bangladesh is already co-hosting the 2031 World Cup. Maybe it'll be a women's tournament, or perhaps an Under-19 World Cup. Whatever it is, it's clear that a little bit of compromise – and a future hosting gig – can go a long way in the world of international cricket.
