Howe's Shock Admission: Would Quit If... What Happens Next?!
Sports 09 February 2026

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has weathered storms before, but the current squall surrounding St. James' Park seems particularly fierce. After a dismal run of form that’s seen the Magpies win only once in their last eight outings, pressure is mounting. You could see it etched on Howe's face after that latest defeat – the disappointment was palpable. But Howe insists he's still the right man to steer the ship, going so far as to say he'd resign if he thought otherwise.

The team's slide to 12th place in the Premier League is a far cry from the heady days of Champions League qualification and that Carabao Cup victory just 11 months ago – a trophy that ended a painful 70-year drought for the Toon Army. That success, in particular, buys you a certain amount of goodwill, and it's clear the Newcastle hierarchy is still backing their man. But football is a fickle beast; goodwill only stretches so far when the points aren't coming.

“There's no doubt in my mind," Howe stated firmly, ahead of their upcoming match against Tottenham Hotspur. "That's why I'm sitting here. If there was doubt, I wouldn't be – because the club is the most important thing. I've never put myself before the club. If I didn't think I was the correct man to take the team forward, and I couldn't give the players what they need, then I would step aside and let someone else do it.” It's a bold statement, and one that will undoubtedly be scrutinized if the losing streak continues. The passion and commitment are there, you can't fault him for that.

Since arriving in November 2021, Howe has undeniably transformed the club. He not only delivered silverware but also steered them away from relegation danger and established them as a force to be reckoned with, at least for a while. Now, however, he faces perhaps his biggest challenge yet: reigniting that spark and turning the tide of negativity that’s engulfing the team. He acknowledges this challenging period, stating he's drawing on previous experience.

The immediate future presents both opportunities and potential pitfalls. Newcastle are favored to progress in the Champions League against Qarabag, and they face Aston Villa in the FA Cup fourth round. A positive result in either of those matches could provide the much-needed boost in morale. "The collective spirit is what we're after," Howe explained, emphasizing the need for unity within the squad. "We're after the collective fight from all the players and if you have that resolve within the group, you can do amazing things again, so it can turn very quickly. The momentum is against us at the moment. We have to swing it back and then the world can look a very different place within a couple of games." Only time will tell if Howe can orchestrate that turnaround. But one thing is clear: the pressure is well and truly on.
