Midterms Under Siege?! Trump's Most Shocking Power Grab Yet!
Current Affairs 09 February 2026

Alright folks, here we go again. It seems like deja vu all over again as we head toward the midterms. President Trump is, shall we say, dusting off his old playbook when it comes to elections that might not swing his way. Get ready for a bumpy ride.

Midterms Under Siege?! Trump's Most Shocking Power...

We're talking about the specter of "canceling" or "nationalizing" the upcoming midterms, all because, according to Trump, they might be tilting toward the Democrats. Sound familiar? It should. It's practically a carbon copy of his unsubstantiated claims from 2020, only this time, it's aimed at controlling Congress.

Look, I've been doing this long enough to know a pattern when I see one. A series of increasingly inflammatory statements, coupled with echoes of past actions, have me, and a lot of other people, wondering if he plans to interfere in these elections. Maybe even more blatantly than what we saw in 2020. And that's saying something.

The backdrop for all this is a decline in his approval ratings. The issues that propelled him to the White House in the first place – immigration and the economy – are now dragging him down. Seven out of ten voters think the economy is on the wrong track, according to a recent Pew poll. His approval rating? Sitting at 41%, down from 47% last year. Ouch.

“The key is the economy, where the Democrats have won the narrative," Republican polling analyst Frank Luntz admitted in a recent video call. "And then there’s the cost of healthcare. There, too, the public believes the Democrats can do better than the Republicans. These will be key issues in the outcome of the November election, and right now both benefit the Democrats.” That pretty much sums it up.

Why does controlling Congress matter so much? Well, it would allow Democrats to effectively neuter Trump's agenda and impose some much-needed checks and balances. More importantly, it could open the door to impeachment proceedings, something that clearly keeps the former President up at night.

This past Sunday, he doubled down on Truth Social, proclaiming, “America’s Elections are Rigged, Stolen, and a Laughingstock all over the World. We are either going to fix them, or we won’t have a Country any longer.” Two weeks ago it was "canceling," this week it's "nationalizing." Elections are the states' responsibility, plain and simple.

“The Republicans should say, ‘We want to take over,’” Trump said. “We should take over the voting ... in at least many, 15 places. The Republicans ought to nationalize the voting. We have states that are so crooked and they’re counting votes,” he maintained, without naming names, though it's not hard to guess he means Democratic-led states.

And let's not forget that NBC interview where he, just like in 2020, hinted he might not recognize the results if they don't go his way. Folks, buckle up. It's going to be a long and potentially very messy few months.
