Well, folks, it looks like Super Bowl Sunday wasn't just about touchdowns and tight ends this year. Former President Donald Trump, never one to shy away from sharing his, shall we say, *unfiltered* opinions, has weighed in on Bad Bunny's halftime show, and let's just say he wasn't exactly doing the "un verano sin ti" dance.
Trump SLAMS Bad Bunny's Halftime Show! What Will H...
Trump took to Truth Social – naturally – to unleash his critique, and it was about as subtle as a linebacker blitz. "The Super Bowl Halftime Show is absolutely terrible, one of the worst, EVER!" he exclaimed. He went on to call it "an affront to the Greatness of America" and suggested it "doesn't represent..." leaving us to fill in the blanks, which, given the context, probably isn't too hard. You know, I almost didn't watch the halftime show myself, but this makes me want to go back and re-watch it now.
Now, this isn't exactly a surprise, is it? Trump's press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, had previously hinted that the former president's musical tastes lean more towards Kid Rock, even mentioning a counter-programming event hosted by Turning Point USA. Apparently, they were offering an alternative to the, *gasp*, Spanish-language beats emanating from the Super Bowl stage. Makes you wonder what kind of chips and dip they were serving at *that* party.
Bad Bunny, for his part, delivered a performance that was undeniably a celebration of his Puerto Rican heritage. A medley of Spanish-language hits, a tribute to his homeland, and a closing "God Bless America" – it was a statement, alright. Some are interpreting it as a comment on immigration, and while that's certainly a valid perspective, it's worth remembering that Puerto Ricans *are* U.S. citizens, albeit ones facing unique political realities. They've been citizens since 1917 but, frustratingly, still lack presidential voting rights and full representation in Congress. It's a bit of a raw deal, to be honest.
Of course, not everyone shared Trump's sentiment. California Governor Gavin Newsom, never one to miss an opportunity to subtly troll the opposition, took to X to offer a very different take. "America, the beautiful. THANK YOU, BAD BUNNY," he posted. A pretty clear endorsement, and a good example of just how divisive even something as seemingly innocuous as a halftime show can become in our current political climate. I guess we'll be talking about this for a while.
