Taliah Scott, the name on everyone's lips after Saturday night's nail-biter, led the No. 15 Baylor Bears past a determined Arizona State squad, securing a hard-fought 67-64 victory. It wasn't always pretty, but sometimes, a win is a win, and the Bears will certainly take it as they continue their march through the Big 12.
Baylor Clutch! Taliah Scott's Heroics Save Bears F...
Scott, a freshman sensation, poured in 17 points, proving to be a clutch performer down the stretch. However, it wasn't just a one-woman show. Gabby Elliott of Arizona State kept the pressure on, draining a jumper with just 15 seconds remaining that narrowed Baylor's lead to a single point at 65-64. You could feel the tension in the air, even watching from home. Jana Van Gytenbeek, cool as ice, responded with two crucial free throws, extending the lead back to three. But the Sun Devils couldn't capitalize, turning the ball over on their final possession, sealing their fate.
The game was a back-and-forth affair, with Arizona State tying it up on multiple occasions. But Baylor managed to grab the lead for good when Kayla Nelms sank two free throws with about five and a half minutes remaining. That seemed to provide a much-needed buffer for the Bears.
While Scott's overall shooting percentage wasn't stellar – she missed 10 of her 14 field-goal attempts – she made up for it with two timely three-pointers and a perfect 7-for-7 performance from the free-throw line. That's the kind of resilience you want to see from a young player. Van Gytenbeek chipped in with 13 points, and Nelms added 12 for Baylor, showcasing the team's depth. And let's not forget Darianna Littlepage-Buggs, who dominated the boards with 12 rebounds to go along with her six points. Talk about a team effort!
For Arizona State, Gabby Elliott was the standout performer, scoring 25 points on an efficient 9-of-17 shooting. Jyah LoVett also contributed with 16 points. They played with heart and determination, but ultimately, it wasn't enough to overcome the Bears. The Sun Devils found themselves trailing for a good portion of the first half, managing to tie it up late before Scott's three free throws gave Baylor a narrow 29-26 advantage at halftime.
With this victory, Baylor extends their winning streak against Arizona State in the series, now standing at 2-0 since the Sun Devils joined the Big 12 Conference and a dominant 6-0 overall. Looking ahead, Arizona State will be back home to face Utah on Wednesday, while Baylor has a tough matchup against No. 14 TCU on Thursday. That should be a good one! You know I'll be watching.
