Purdue managed to squeak out a win against Oregon, extending the Ducks' losing streak to a painful nine games. The final score was 68-64, but honestly, this one was much closer than the ranking disparity would suggest. You could feel the tension in the arena, and it really came down to a few clutch plays at the very end.
Purdue Survives Oregon Scare: Loyer's Clutch Shot ...
The hero of the hour was undoubtedly Fletcher Loyer. The sophomore guard poured in 18 points, but more importantly, he hit the go-ahead three-pointer with just 51 seconds left on the clock. Seriously, that shot was ice cold. He then calmly sank three of four free throws in the closing seconds to seal the deal for the Boilermakers. That kind of composure is what separates good players from great ones. He really seems to be developing a knack for those kinds of moments.
Braden Smith also had a solid outing, contributing 13 points, four rebounds, and four assists. And, in a somewhat overshadowed moment, he reached an impressive milestone. Smith became the first Big Ten player *ever* to record 1,000 points and 500 assists in conference games alone. It's a testament to his consistency and impact on the team. You've got to appreciate a player who can both score and create for others. Trey Kaufman-Renn chipped in with 12 points as well, rounding out Purdue's top scorers.
Oregon, despite their struggles, put up a real fight. Nate Bittle led the Ducks with a game-high 23 points, and Takai Simpkins added 14. They even managed to take a 59-56 lead with just over five minutes remaining, putting some serious pressure on Purdue. You could sense the upset brewing at that point. However, they just couldn't quite close it out.
The Ducks have now lost four straight road games and are a dismal 1-9 since January 2nd. It's a tough stretch, no doubt. They tied the game at 36 heading into halftime, but that was followed by a back-and-forth second half that ultimately swung in Purdue's favor. Wei Lin missed a crucial three-pointer that could have tied the game in the final seconds, and Kwame Evans Jr. missed a free throw after securing the rebound. Those little moments often decide games, especially close ones.
Ultimately, Purdue found a way to win, which is what good teams do. They've been on the road a lot recently, so getting this victory at home, even if it wasn't pretty, is huge for their momentum. As for Oregon, they'll need to find a way to turn things around quickly, or this season could spiral completely out of control. But this game showed they have the heart to compete. Maybe they'll turn things around soon.
