Happy 10th birthday, XCOM 2! Can you believe it? A decade ago, Firaxis unleashed a game that has since become synonymous with both tactical brilliance and controller-smashing frustration. It's a game that I, and countless others, have poured hundreds of hours into, and honestly, the love-hate relationship is still going strong.
XCOM 2 Turns 10! Still Making Gamers Rage? See Why...
There's a specific moment that defines the XCOM 2 experience, and it's burned into the memory of every player. It's the moment when one of your top soldiers, positioned perfectly, with a 90% chance to hit, somehow… misses. Against a Sectoid, no less. It's a gut punch. It’s illogical. It's infuriating. It's XCOM 2. And that's precisely why we keep coming back.
What makes XCOM 2 so special isn't just the strategic gameplay. It's the way the game makes you care about your soldiers. They're not just pixels on a screen; they're characters you customize, equip, and, most importantly, invest in. I remember a grenadier I had named Paul. Maxed out stats, best gear, glorious Swedish beard. He was *the* guy. But then, disaster struck. He missed a critical shot, a teammate got mind-controlled, and the mission went south. It wasn't just a gameplay failure; it was a personal tragedy for Paul. You actually feel that stuff in XCOM 2.
So, is XCOM 2 worth playing in 2024? Absolutely. In fact, I'd argue now is the *best* time. The game is frequently on sale, making it super accessible. But more importantly, the modding community has been hard at work for the past decade, creating an absolutely staggering amount of content. We're talking new armors, new maps, even mods that let you turn your soldiers into sentient cacti. Seriously! There are also amazing quality-of-life mods like "Stop Wasting My Time" (a godsend) and "Evac All" that smooth out some of the rougher edges of the base game.
And for those who want to add a little *spice* to the resistance, there's even a romance mod. Imagine your soldiers courting each other between missions! The HR department at XCOM HQ must be having a field day. Regardless, the fact that such a mod exists, and is popular, says a lot about how invested players get in their squads. XCOM 2 resides eternally on my Steam account. It's a classic, plain and simple. If you're looking for a game that will simultaneously frustrate and captivate you, a game that will provide you with stories to tell (and rage to vent), then look no further. You'll hate it, you'll love it, and you'll never forget it. Happy birthday, XCOM 2!
