Switch 2's Secret Retro Feature REVEALED! You Won't Believe This!
Gaming News 06 February 2026

Retro gamers, rejoice! It looks like the Switch 2 is getting a dose of nostalgia in the form of a new "Virtual Console," but with a twist. Hamster Corp., known for its Arcade Archives series, is stepping up to the plate with "Console Archives," offering individually purchased classic console games on Nintendo's next-gen system. This is welcome news, especially given Nintendo's own shift away from the traditional Virtual Console format.

Switch 2's Secret Retro Feature REVEALED! You Won'...

Remember the good old days of browsing the Wii Shop Channel, eagerly anticipating which retro gems would be available for download? Nintendo seemingly abandoned that model in favor of Nintendo Switch Online, a subscription service that offers a rotating library of classic games. While that's fine for some, many of us miss the option to permanently own and curate our own collection of retro favorites. Enter Hamster Corp.

The announcement came during today's Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase, and it sounds promising. Starting *today* on the Switch 2, you'll be able to download individual console titles. PlayStation 5 owners aren't being left out either - a release is slated for next week. Sadly, Xbox and original Switch users will have to sit this one out for now. No love for the old Switch, it seems.

So, what's on the initial roster? We're talking *Cool Boarders* for $12 and *Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos* for $8. Not a bad start, honestly. Hamster is also teasing some more obscure titles, including *Doraemon* and *Sonic Wings Special*. That's where things get interesting. While *Cool Boarders* and *Ninja Gaiden* are classics, it's the deep cuts and lesser-known games that often make these retro initiatives truly special. I, for one, am excited to see what hidden gems Hamster unearths.

Hamster's commitment to preserving gaming history is commendable. Their Arcade Archives series has been going strong since 2014, boasting over 500 releases. That's dedication! They even managed to snag some classic Nintendo arcade titles that never made it to the original Virtual Console. That's a win for everyone. As Hamster puts it, they want to "create an environment where anyone can play [these games] anytime, anywhere." That's a mission I can get behind.

One thing I found particularly interesting is the reappearance of *Ninja Gaiden II*. It was available on both the Wii and Wii U Virtual Consoles, each time costing $5. Now, with the eShops for those systems shuttered, Hamster is offering it again on the Switch 2, this time for $8. It does make you wonder about the sustainability of digital game ownership. Still, for those who missed it the first two times (or simply want it on their shiny new Switch 2), this is another chance to experience a true classic. I can’t help but notice the irony of repurchasing the game when ROMs are just a google search away, but hey, people pay for convenience.
