Ubisoft's apparently hit the brakes on a rumored cooperative multiplayer Assassin's Creed game, leaving some fans disappointed and raising questions about the future of multiplayer in the franchise. French publication Origami broke the news, and IGN independently translated the report, suggesting the project, codenamed "AC League," is now a thing of the past.
Assassin's Creed Co-Op Game Canceled?! Fans in Upr...
The game, being developed at Ubisoft Annecy, was initially envisioned as a DLC expansion for the upcoming Assassin's Creed Shadows, which, as many know, is set in feudal Japan. Imagine that: four assassins, working together through a series of planned missions, bringing the story of Shadows' Season Pass to a close. It sounds pretty cool, right? AC League was designed for up to four players.
Rumors about AC League had been swirling for a while, with Insider Gaming reporting on it last year. The project, according to Origami, was quite ambitious, intended to set the stage for future multiplayer functionalities within the Assassin's Creed universe. Think of revisiting the blend of solo and multiplayer action we saw in Assassin's Creed Unity or Black Flag – especially given the buzz about a potential Black Flag remake. The intent was there to breathe some fresh air into the franchise.
But as development progressed, Ubisoft Annecy's higher-ups started to question whether AC League really fit as a DLC for Shadows. They worried about the timeline, as any responsible developer would. So, they came up with another idea: turn it into a smaller, standalone title, but still use elements from the Shadows open world. There was even an invite-only alpha planned for May 2026. Shows how far along things were, and how quickly they can change in the industry.
Unfortunately, AC League reportedly got caught in Ubisoft's ongoing restructuring. They've been reorganizing and cutting costs for months, leading to project cancellations, studio closures, and all sorts of creative reshuffling. The word on the street is that Ubisoft Annecy's leadership was informed just last week that AC League was being axed. Ouch.
There's a sliver of good news, though. Origami reports that some of the technical advancements made during the AC League project will be transferred back into Ubisoft's Anvil engine. The goal is to make it easier to add replayable, cost-effective multiplayer modes to future Assassin's Creed games. So, maybe this isn’t a complete loss for those who crave multiplayer in the franchise.
However, the cancellation leaves over a quarter of Annecy's 270 employees without a project, and that’s definitely concerning. It naturally raises concerns about potential layoffs, which is always a worry when something like this happens. Hopefully, Ubisoft will find a way to redeploy those talented folks effectively.
